Put August 8th on your calendar for the 1st annual CTZCC Autocross!!

Connecticut CART has asked our club to attend their August 8th (Sunday) autocross at Rowley Spring in Bristol, CT. After experiencing Lime Rock, this is your chance to race your car by itself on a secure, closed track with little fear. It will be held at Rowley Spring, 210 Redstone Hill Rd. Bristol CT 06010. A good time to arrive is 8-8:30am, stay as long as you want.

HOW IT WORKS:

- When you arrive at the autocross you register your car and get a number and class depending on your engine size and level of modifications. The fee to run is $30 which generally gives you three runs.
- Your car will then go through tech inspection and all loose items must be out of the car. The battery must be secured.
- A walk of the course is usually done so people can see and memorize the course.
- When your class comes up, cars line up by number and each person drives through the course one a time…receiving their time at the end. Super Fun! Knocking over a cone adds 1 second to your time.
- All drivers are asked to spend ½ hour at some point at one of the flag stations, putting cones back up, etc. which is good manners for all autocross events.

You can drive as a fast or slow as you want, your car can be dead stock or fast and furious…makes no difference. Come and test your car and have fun!

IMPORTANT!
You need a helmet to race, no exceptions. The requirement is that it be "Snell" rated which is the approved helmet standard and not older than 10 years. A cheap motorcycle helmet with a DOT sticker is not sufficient and will be rejected. If you’re on a budget you get by with one like this for example: http://tinyurl.com/5vqnrx or you can contact John Williamson who is the CT CART resident helmet guru and has great deals on them. His contact info is neonjohnw@earthlink.net or 203-268-8086. If you're not sure you should contact John for the most accurate info.

There is also a noise limit so no straight pipes or open mufflers. More details are available on their website: http://www.cartct.com/index1.shtml. Keep in mind that you can come for free and watch, you don’t have to race.

BRYAN’S TIPS

- I recommend taking out your spare tire and only running a ¼ tank of gas to save weight
- Pump your tires up to 35-40psi to gain more traction and sidewall grip. Not an exact science, you may want experiment on your car beforehand.
- Bring a fold up chair, cooler with drinks, food for yourself. They will have a grill but its best to be prepared and self-sufficient. They will have a port-o-john onsite.

**Please post your interest here so we can give them give them a heads up on how many people are coming. Still not convinced? Watch this autocross video and tell me you don’t want to do this!

I have wanted us to do this for TWO YEARS!!!

Thank you, Bryan ~ thank you, thank you, thank you.

Neon John sold me a great new helmet for about 100 bucks last year;

I'm in! Very Happy

*(Significantly, 08Aug would have been Colin's 28th birthday. I'm gonna be driving and laughing for him as I crunch those cones Wink)

Awesome video - thank you!

This really looks like a fun and unique event - even if you're just watching at the track from a comfy chair.

Thanks for all the hard work organizing with CART.

Forgot to mention: they said they will create a special class for Zcars so we can run everyone together.

How about some healthy competition within the club!

Great job on coordinating this Bryan. I will be wagering on "other peoples cars" on the sidelines!

Buy a brain bucket!

Mike Rosann just got a great full-face crash hat for about $100. That's a good investment, since the first time you try AutoCrossing, you're gonna want to do it a lot more.

i got a nice hat last year from Neon John Williams for about $125, with exactly the features I wanted.

It was $99.95 from Bell Helmets, http://www.bellhelmets.com/ . $14.99 for shipping, almost painless.

The weather forecast is looking absolutely stupendous - I'm looking forward to joining Ross in some betting from the sidelines....

Hmmm...let's see. I haven't driven in an autocross event in a few years...and all I've ever driven in an autocross were front-wheel drive cars with power steering and limited slips...

Now it's time to switch things up with a 40 year old rear-wheel drive car, with no power steering, and street tires...let the comedy begin Laughing

My Dad and I hope to make it on Sunday. Ross and Jim - let's just say 50/1 odds for HLS-3011137 should cover things. Razz

Looking forward to it!

-Colin

PostPosted: Thu Aug 05, 2010 7:13 pm    Post subject: IMPORTANT INFO FOR SUNDAY- Please read! Reply with quote Back to top

Below is some important information from Bob Doiron of CART which will help the Autocross on Sunday run more smoothly, so please read carefully.

**DRIVERS**
- Each of the drivers will be given a number when they register. It will be a 500# (546, 547, etc) and we will be considered novices. Cars are run in order by car#.

- Novices run first so we will be lining up right after the drivers meeting about 11AM. But everyone must be at the site by 8:30 to register. This event is not controlled by us, so if you get there late they may not let you register.

- Each novice will be required to have one of their instructors make their first run with them to assure they can follow the course and answer any questions they may have.

- After the novices run they start with #1 and give everyone else a shot. It takes about 30-40 minutes for the group to cycle through then they start again...novices then the regular #s.

- The event should be done (5-6 runs) about 3:00. If time allows they will have fun runs ($2 each) and as many as they can accommodate.

- Each driver will have a work assignment at some point in the day. A half hour at a flag station (easy job) and that has precedence over running. If you are working or scheduled to work that must be done first and then after work make your run. No one will miss a run due to working.

DON’T FORGET YOUR HELMET AND $30 cash for the event fee!

**SPECTATORS**

If you show up and just want to watch, say you are on “Bob Doiron #41” crew and sign the waiver as “CREW” when you enter the lot.

These are fun events so there is no need to stress. To make the most of the day the best strategy is be flexible, enjoy the atmosphere, and make sure you have drinks/food/chair and whatever you need to keep you comfortable.

See everyone there!
