Hi Folks,

We are new to the club and decided we would post some pics of our engine bay restoration on our 1970 240Z. Most of these have been on a post about the 1978 280Z we have been trying to sell, but they belong in the general forum.

"So here they be!"

Thanks,

Colin and Robin Foote

WOW, nice! I'm just trying to get my 72 road worthy, but after I drive it for awile, I need to do that whole restoration thing someday. I'm just happy to have no rot to deal with. (Cali. car.)

thats is awesome. great attention to detail...
the finished car looks like it just came out of the factory from 1970.
Excellent job.
i'd be too afraid to drive it now. it would just sit in the shed :(

I will be adding more photos shortly...

Also, anyone have experience re-installing the intake manifold (with carbs attached) and exhaust headers on a 240Z? They need to be installed at the same time, correct?

Is there a recommended SOP on this?

This is one of the two most pristine reconstructions I've ever seen, the other being our member Dave Russell, who also did his 1970 240Z (#0958). Our Washington State member, Dan Linquist, ALSO has a 1970 (#01651) which he tore down to the bare metal and has about 97% reassembled now. Our New York member Clive now has his own early 1970 car (#01905) and we haven't given up trying to convince him to go the same route. Also in New York, Allan Robbins owns cars #00006 AND the un-numbered "Toronto Car Show" 240, which were the first two Zs released to the world ~ they have been restored back to Bob Sharp's original race condition.

Thank GAWD for those dedicated die-hards who appreciate the few very early 240 cars remaining, and are willing to devote the time and money to preserve them. It makes me so proud to be a member of this Club, knowing that all these very important 1969-70 240Zs belong to our members. They make my 1970 car (#02807) seem young by comparison!

I've been wanting to drive out to RI to see this car since the project began, but "life happens" and one thing after another has kept me away from it. I guess that's better for Robin anyway ~ I'd just drool all over his new car:lol: I'll get out there sometime this spring.

Frank

And Robin, by the way ~ in answer to your Q about the manifolds:

I've seen it done both ways. Some of the same bolts and span-washers serve to hold the exhaust and intake. If both those units are ready for installation at the same time, they can be mounted together (one at a time). I have also watched the exhaust manifold or header mounted first and screwed into place to seat the gasket while other work was being done to the intake and carbs. When they were ready, the nuts holding the exhaust were unscrewed and the intake was slipped over it. The nuts and the spread washers were then secured to hold both manifolds down together. The heat shield attaches to the intake manifold, but I found it easiest to mount and torque everything else before replacing that. (And by the way, I'm holding one of those for you off the parts car).

Be sure to include the fuel rail and any hose clamps when you replace the nuts. Some manifold studs (such as the last one on cylinder #6 exhaust port) are used to secure hose clamps or hose guides to the engine. My intake manifold heater hose was a good example ~ after everything was torqued down, I found I had failed to secure the guide and the rear engine hoist hoop under that nut. Duh.

Not earth-shaking, but an unnecessary pain.

My own car has headers, which screw every nut onto a separate stud. I will have to go knock the snow off the '71 parts car to study the stock manifold setup on that. (It has a round-port head, maybe different from the square-port head on my '70). I recall there are spread washers which hold down both intake and exhaust manifolds together. I've seen guys use small sockets as spacers, to screw down the exhaust manifold onto the new gasket while they worked on their intake manifold. Seemed like a clever idea, but I never had enough sockets to spare to try that!

I've always personally felt the entire gasket should be compressed at one time, so the exhaust could be hung on the studs but not seated until the intake manifold was ready to be torqued down along with it.

Surely you will use all new fasteners and studs, which will make temporary hold-down clean and easy.

What did you do to your SUs?

Frank

*(OK, Ive looked at the 1971 round-port parts car. I can't add much to what I said above, except to mention the six anti-polution air pipes which force air into the exhaust manifold from the airpump. And I can't say much about them ~ having no experience with them except cutting them off and rolling them up like toothpaste tubes back in the 70s when I removed my frozen airpump. Since I did the same thing with the parts car and have already discarded the airpipe, I don't recall how they were mounted. If you have headers you won't use these anyway ~ if you're going stock you'll need them, but ask someone else about how and when to mount them. That's about all I can offer; the rest would be guesswork).

HOW ABOUT A SHOT OF THE PORT SIDE OF YOUR ENGINE?

In my opinion, it's easier to mount the manifolds first and then mount the carbs.

Carbs are ready to go.

Radiator, condenser, and new strut tower hardware.

Panasports are on.

Headers are just hanging there for now...

Hi All,

So this weekend I finally got the exhaust, headers, intake, carbs, and fuel rail on the car.

And to answer Frank's question...we had our carbs and manifold restored by Zeddsaver up in Canada. Right now all I can say is they look nice...we'll see how they run.

Best,

Colin

It's been said before, but clearly this Z has been treated to "better then new" restoration. Very nice.
