Does anyone know how to cancel ZCON reservations? I'm not a geek but they're sure not making it easy.

Al

I don't blame you, Paul. Why risk your life?
I don't know anyone who is going, now.
I will be interested in learning how many people actually attend, or whether they will postpone it until maybe next year. I feel pretty bad for all the people who put in months of work and planning on this, and may have to cancel it.

But we are still alive to drive our Zs.

Z's as in more than one for some us............say hello to Z #2, and staying alive to drive it is a good thing. At least I have plenty to do, no boredom here.

Jan and I were looking forward to ZCON with our Z-Friends. Nashville is on her bucket list. However, as many are now realizing, it is just not worth the risks. Especially now with recent increases of COVID between home and there, as well as in TN. Though it may seem insensitive to all the work efforts and plans to put it together, I do really hope it becomes postponed to next year. Same venue and original plans so salvage as much of the work as possible in the end. And that is not just a personal desire for us to make it there. I would hate to learn later on that even JUST ONE Z family attendee gets it and/or transfers it to any others there, or any of their friends or family after returning home due to exposure in TN or during travel transit to/from. Way to many invisible variables for a large number of people. Plus actions and exposures which are hard to get everyone following/controlling from their departure till return back to home. Oh well, Off my soap box. In mean time I wish Safety and Health to us all. Z Ya'll in future when the COVID Dust settles with cures and vaccines (or better just disappears).

Well, Gary T, Rick Morgan, Thor, Tengu, Karl, Jimbo Frederick, Big Al, Paul and I have decided not to attend this year.

Johnny Z, are you signed up to go?

It doesn't look like it will be much of a convoy from here. No idea whether ZCCR is planning to attend ZCon, but John T has retired as their President and they will hold no Watkins Glen/picnic/car show outing of their own this summer. Our member Clive Bogle, president of the NYZCC is one of the managing officers so he will certainly attend unless the entire event is cancelled.

As much as I would like to attend ZCON and to include the Tail of the Dragon as part of the adventure, I agree whole heartedly with Gary on this one. It's just not worth the risk. Stay healthy Z folks!

All winter I have been gathering parts for a 3.1L build and I have been waiting since April for the cylinder head that will be going on my car to be completed. It doesn't look like it will be done in time for ZCON.

I do however have the head that came off the car this winter fully assembled and ready to run. Made the decision this weekend to slap the 3.1L together and make the trip to Nashville. 19 days left to get the engine assembled, replace the transmission+diff, and sort out all the bugs before taking the 1100mi trip

 Wow! Our Club GoKart champion is still alive! :D

Surprised to hear that 3.1L isn't together yet, but I hope you make it reliable in that short period of time. Remember, it's only 1100 miles ONE way; you still have to make it back here. You're of no use to us when you're stranded in the mountains of West-By-Gawd-Virginia, needing a replacement for a 50 year-old broken widget.

When Vinny rebuilt my 2.8L he told me to break it in slowly over a month, leaving home in ever-increasing circles, to make it easier to get home if something went wrong. I had two incidents; my alternator died on the way to Rochester Z Club meeting, then again my fuse block melted and nearly set my Z on fire. Glad I took his advice.

Please try to caravan with other Zs, if anyone from this region is still going.
And send us pictures of all the cars which do show up (both of them).
Best of luck, and let us know if you need any Z parts in the days before you leave.

The Indy, Daytona, and Darlington races are only 500 miles long and only last 3hrs, but teams of professional mechanics spend months preparing and testing an engine for those events. (All 3 events are cancelled this year due to the pandemic, which would surely spread wildly thru a bandstand of 18,000 screaming fans).

I wonder what they would say if they were asked to prepare a reliable engine to go 2,200 miles, and given 10 days to get it into the car and sorted?

Interpretation: Not the safest way to break in an unproven engine.

Keeping friends healthy and safe are more important than any potentially awesome car event.

My last post was more a statement of my intent at this point. A LOT of parts need to arrive on time, a lot of stuff needs to come together, and I want to do at least 300mi in CT before I would actually leave on the trip. CT has rules in place for out of state travel which I plan on abiding by (testing before returning, two week quarantine after arrival) and my KN95 will be practically glued to my face while I am down there.

Risky trip all around but the Z is only going to turn 50 once! If its meant to be it will happen, if its not, my rod bolts(or one of the other gajillion parts ordered) will get lost in the mail until its too late

Good luck, hope it works out. I had the thought that I could do my front end rebuild, get new tires and go, but my pinion bearing sounds worse than ever, and just not up to a rear end transfer in such a short time. Also trying to move forward after losing my Father, I have been very sluggish for a while. The Z spirit is slowly coming back and hanging in there. May it all go well, take lots of pictures for us, and if you can bring back some 50th anniversary memorabilia, shirts especially, I'd be glad to purchase with interest. Stay safe and have a good journey.

Porkbun, are you still doing this?
Here's a clip from today's news regarding last month's annual motorcycle rally in Sturgis S.D.

"A motorcycle rally held in South Dakota in August and attended by hundreds of thousands of Americans from across the country is linked to more than 260,000 Covid-19 cases recorded in the US since 2 August, a new study suggests, with researchers describing the event as a "worst-case scenario" for spreading the disease".

Our own 100-member Annual Club Fall Outing picnic at Ross' mansion has been cancelled this year, too. Every major race in the world has been cancelled.
All major league sports have cancelled their seasons, as well.

Do you really want to risk driving an untested new engine 2200 miles, without escort, into the jaws of death? Are you really that lucky? Are all your friends and family members immune? Even if you return OK, how would you feel if you brought this plague home to any or all of them?

The odds of you having a safe and healthy trip down and back, with no family health risk, are poor. The entire rest of the world has decided to forsake trillions of dollars of annual entertainment and recreational income to avoid spreading this deadly pandemic. Most small hotels are restricted from hosting short-term travelers by federal or state order. It sounds irresponsible to still hold this ZCon until a proven vaccine is available to prevent the spread of such a deadly and highly contagious disease.

Not trying to sound "fatherly" to you, just "friendly". Please reconsider.

Frank T
