Project 530Z update:

Thanks again to the help of my Z pals, my freshly painted suspension parts began reassembly. New struts, springs, bearings and bushings for a solid ride. New brakes all around including upgraded front brakes, bigger and better to help stop the 330hp I expect to be putting down. Next up, putting back together the suspension components into front and rear assemblies to bolt back into the car.

Stay tuned...

Project 530Z update:

I took a few weeks off to visit my daughter's family in Georgia (see my FOR SALE post for some awesome Z parts I picked up along the way!) but now with the stay-at-home-edict I am back at full speed ahead on the project.

The engine bay/brake lines/fuel lines have been refurbished and the bay repainted. Ready for the new occupant. The suspension was totally removed from the car, taken apart and repainted. All new brakes, bushings, struts and springs. The front brakes have been upgraded to Z31 trubo rotors and Toyota 4 piston calipers. Ready to be bolted back onto the chassis.

Then, the drivetrain. Then the new body kit, body work and paint. 16" Rota wheels.

Stay tuned.

Oh Duuuuude!
You are never gonna sell this car.
The very first time you drive it you will self-isolate to every paved American road.

Update: Like the rest of you I have been pretty much holed up at home for the past few weeks. I sure hope that all of my CTZCC brothers and sisters are healthy and doing well!

The quarantine time has prevented my Z pals from lending a hand, so I’ve set about doing as much as I can do by myself. So far, not too bad!

I’ve finished rebuilding the front suspension with new urethane bushings, KYB gas struts and Eibach springs. The parts have been bolted back to the chassis and the upgraded 300zx turbo rotors and Toyota 4 piston calipers are next. The rear suspension assembly is ready to go as well, but I’ll wait for some help with that.

The gas tank was removed and a local radiator shop boiled it out for me. The heavy undercoating helped prevent extensive rust on the outside and now the inside is good to go as well. A fresh coat of paint and new sending unit are next.

The LS engine now has a new water pump and motor mounts. The intake and new oil pan go on later this week.

Stay safe, stay healthy my friends!

Stay tuned...

Sorry Frank, it was my grandfather’s, circa 1940s. It’s a keeper.

Project 350Z update:

All of this staying at home is forcing me to accomplish things on the project I thought I needed help with. While there is still lots to do that will need assistance, I’ve managed to keep things rolling along on my own.

I dropped the gas tank and the boys at Empire Radiator boiled out the 43 years of crud that was inside. Luckily, none was serious rust and the outside had so much undercoating, it was well preserved. Now giving it a fresh coat of black rustoleum, should be good for another 43 years.

Turning to the LS, with all new gaskets, the Camaro Z28 intake manifold was installed along with a new, larger 92mm throttle body. The stainless steel headers finally found their new home along with heavy duty spark plug wires.

This coming week, a new aluminum low profile oil pan, new racing u-joints for the axle shafts and SLOWLY putting the rear suspension back in. By myself.

Stay tuned and stay safe!

Coming together nicely! How much difference do you suspect the Z28 manifold and TB might give you over the stock units?

C-19 is giving us all an opportunity to catch up on scores of little "corner projects" around the house and garage. In 5 years we might look back on this time as very precious. Our families are all home, our work is set aside, prices are dropping all around us, the Fed is practically giving money away, street crime has nosedived, there are plenty of parking spaces and the air is noticeably cleaner.

Frank, the engine was a LS LM7 out of a 1999 Silverado. One of the biggest differences between the truck variation and the cars was the intake. The truck had a “tall” intake with a complex system of runners designed to provide more torque than horsepower as would be needed in a truck. The Camaro/Firebird/Corvette intakes were much simpler and cleaner designed for premium airflow and more horsepower over torque. The cams were slightly different as well. Also, a switch to the shorter intake manifold was a must to clear the Z hood! When done, I expect to be in the neighborhood of 325hp/330tq.

And yes, I agree. It’s like the big guy upstairs has called a “time out” on the world and set us in the penalty box for a bit to regroup. A long time coming and not necessarily a bad thing.
