Check out this cool video of Mark Higgins driving his WRX/STI at the Isle of Mann. He hits 175 MPH and averages 128.7 MPH. Amazing driving skill and cool telemetry.

 WOW.

First, I had this video playing back on 1.5 speed, which made it really interesting

Second, I loved the monitor system in this car; everything from his skin temperature (not hooked up) to the 9,000rpm tachometer. I can't imagine how he kept his heartbeat below 150bpm; mine was faster than that, just watching!

His speed ran as low as 31mph to as high as 177mph. At exactly 16:45 he took his hands off the wheel at 120mph to wave back at some bare-chested girl on the left bank!

I doubt there is any way anyone could actually learn this whole course, which makes it a really scary proposition. Add the changing shadows and possibility of uncontrolled animals strolling across the road at any moment, and you have a realistic threat level which will keep you awake nights. I wonder what nightmares race drivers have?

Finally, altho he doesn't mention it, that helicopter (which we all consider a camera platform) is actually his best chance of surviving a crash. In the time it would take for spectators to run to him, call for help, and to get an ambulance (or fire truck) out to save him, he'd be dead. The helicopter has medics, extraction tools, fire extinguishers, and a stretcher to MedEvac him straight to a hospital.

Oh yeah, you can stop looking for that bare-chested girl along the left bank 8) .

I'll see your Mark Higgins WRX at the Isle of Mann and raise you a Ken Block Escort on a 2-lane rainy road under construction in the Alps.

British comedian Neil Cole (Scotty Cole's distant cousin?) rides along and comments. I started the video after Cole's 8-minute prelude. He knew he was about to die so he delayed the ride as long as possible.

I'm glad I read your whole message Frank. I'd still be looking for the girl in the video!

From my High School friend Bill Blythe who raced there that year "We were there and saw this. Some people were pissed because the car lap kept the 500+ race Marshalls waiting over half an hour for the record setting attempt."
I had posted it to him on Facebook so he could see it, turns out he was there in person.
