Guys,

my car is in the process of getting most of the interior parts reinstalled in the vehicle. When i purchased it, the interior was basically stripped and i have been piecing it back together. MY question is which piece should i have in the location directly in front of the shiftier.

any help appreciated. Vehicle info below:

HLS30-28360
Manufacture date 4/71

Chris,

The 71 Z I have has the ashtray and cigar lighter directly in front of the shifter. The ashtray is removeable to access the fuse block underneath. There were lots of pictures in FM6's link but many showed modified consoles. Not sure what you plan on doing with yours though.

Good luck!

Rotsa Ruck finding one of those ashtray units in good shape. I have searched vainly for them several times for other Club members (after giving away my last two spares for free) and all I found were broken bits which needed to be glued back together or have the little ashtray door springs replaced. Last year they were going for ridiculous prices on eBay.

Here is the beast you're hunting:

http://www.2040-parts.com/1970-early-19 ... -i1455608/

The cigarette lighter fits into the circular hole. The spring-loaded, hinged plastic lid covers a tiny shot-glass ashtray. The whole unit slides into that big empty space ahead of the shifter to cover (and allow access to) the fuse block. That long black plastic "tail piece" is what breaks most often and is really difficult (if not impossible) to repair invisibly.

Please note that these people are scared to even mention a price, but just leave it up to the highest bidder. Prices are commonly into the hundreds of dollars.

PS: Conversely, the sliding-aluminum door ashtray for the 1972-74 Zs are only about $50, but won't fit your console.

John I would have taken pictures of my car for him but it's not a 71 and looks nothing like yours.
Perhaps you can post pic's for him.

If the early style is hard to find, cant you put in the later style console? Until you find one, good luck.
