Hi All- my name is Rich S and I might have met some of you yesterday at the annual meet. I drive the green 1971 240z. It was a pleasure to meet a lot of you and thanks for being so welcoming. Excited to be part of the gang.
Cheers,
Rich

Welcome Rich. Picture-perfect 240, and those 8-spoke wheels just set it off.

I was the guy who handed out the stick-on ID badge to you. We're glad to have you aboard. You joined with PERFECT timing; you got to come to the best event of our year. All the cars head for hibernation right after the picnic, because snow and salt are soon to follow. It felt good to put another 120 miles on my Z before I button it up again this year.

We have over 800 members in the CTZCC, about 500 of them in CT. There are nearly 1,000 cars listed to our members. We can usually get about 30 members together for a monthly meeting (we hold them at various locations around CT) and last year we got about 100 cars on Ross' lawn  When he still lived here, Bob Sharp Hisself attended each of these picnics. This year the weather was "Iffy" and the National Z Convention was being held in Atlanta, which took some of our members down south instead of to Darien.

I urge you to stay active on this website over the winter. You'll get to meet and know a few members that way, and an active website helps keep some of us sane during the winter.

Tell us some things about your beautiful '71.

I'm glad you're here with us.

Frank T

PS; do you have a pond near you?

Thanks Frank and Karl- appreciate the warm welcome!

I’ve been restoring the car for A bit over two years . Started off with a stock restoration and then started moving to more performance and personal oriented upgrades. Vinny is currently building me a 2.8 L that I’m really excited to pop in to the car now that I have an upgraded suspension, brakes and rear end .

Excited for the spring so I can get to know the rest of you all better!

Cheers,
Rich

If Vinny is doing your engine, you will have a wonderful time with your Z. Just be sure to follow his break-in directions and use the oil he recommends. He's presently rebuilding my original L-24 into an "L-27". I am currently driving on his rebuilt L-28 which will be removed this year and replaced with the enhanced original engine. He is clearly the most-experienced L-series engine builder in CT (and probably all of New England) and is highly recommended. Be sure to add him to your Christmas card list each year.

Frank

Yeah, I saw your engine getting prepped when I was in there a few weeks ago. Was going to go the same route as you with the original motor but decided to store it, and run with the l28! We will both be ready with fresh new hearts for our cars come spring. Can’t wait!

If I was really smart I'd try to sell you the lower half of my hypo L-28; flattop zero-deck pistons in an F54 Siamesed "turbo" block, .20" overbored, re-cooked crank and lightweight NISMO rods, all painstakingly built by Vinny 3 yrs ago with something less than 5,000 miles on it, carefully broken-in and well loved. I'll keep the oil pan and hi-capacity turbo oil pump, and maybe the front case. Of course, if Vinny already has a block underway for you, my offer would be too late to save you any money.

It probably wouldn't hurt me to sacrifice a little garage space to store a spare short block anyway, just in case I ever wanted to pull my original out again and enhance it some more. But for now it's more important to me to have the original-number L24 (now an "L27") back in the car. I also have a set of triple 40mm Webers I'm not doing anything with at the moment, if you felt really froggy about building your horsepower.

Thanks Frank- I most certainly am interested if that is a sincere offer! Just depends how far along Vinny has gotten To date. I’m going to give Him a call tomorrow to hear his thoughts given that he obviously knows what your engine is all about. Wouldn’t have the first thought of what something like that would cost but would love to hear your thoughts there, as it seems like a bit more of a stout bottom end then mine is going to be.

Cheers,
Rich

... May be interested in the Webers as well, depending on how much I’m into it by the time I get the engine back in the car Ahahaha.

Talk to Vinny. He certainly knows my engine. I'm transferring the trick million-dollar head onto the new 'L27' block so that won't be available for sale, but we three could talk about the block in time for your transplant if you're serious. I need pocket money to take the Z to Europe this summer, so I might be easy.

And my Webers are the real old-school Italians made by the real Weber factory, not the cheaper new Filipino-made units. I've had Harley riders begging me to separate them and sell them individually.

Here's an interesting history about Webers if you're ever bored:

Rich; disregard about my F54 block. I spoke with Vinny and he told me he's too far along with your engine already. Sorry; it could have been a good idea and saved you a fistful of dollars if I had spoken up sooner.

Aha, yeah I spoke with him today as well and was going to say the same thing but you beat me to it! No worries, and greatly appreciate the offer. That said still may be interested in the Weber’s depending on condition and price. I assume they may need a rebuild/refresh? Do I need to get linkages, manifold, etc?

Thanks in advance,
Rich

They're dirty. They are just as they came off the last car they were on. I have never tried to clean them at all, not even with an air hose.

1970s DCOE-40mm real Italian Webers, Canon manifold, return linkage and springs, air filters, fuel pressure gauge, braided fuel lines. Originally bought and mounted on a (GIRLS! ) 1971 240z by Bob Sharp Datsun, later sold and mounted on a 260z 'drift' car, [ ] and ran like crazy at that time. The previous owner tached 8,000 rpm from his 260 with these.

More carbs need more cam, so that's a hidden cost if you intend to mount them on your 240. I got a really good 280" lift/290* cam for under $200, which would be great for these carbs. Idle speed just under 1,000rpm to be "happy".

I'll be honest; triple Webers intimidate me. I want more carburetion than the dual SUs but I don't want Trips. Dual Webers would be fine by me if there was such a manifold, but nobody makes one for the Datsun L-series engines. SU has re-introduced the old dual-throat DU-6 SUs from the 1950s but they are far more expensive than I had hoped they would be, and again, nobody makes a manifold for the Z engine yet.

Wow Frank! Great history and I would love too keep the story going strong on my 240z for years to come, but might be a bit more work then I’m apt to handle. Where would you need to be on these?
