Hello everyone, I am a Z fanatic that recently moved to NH from LA. I know I met some of you last year at the ZCCNE meeting at Lori and Wayne's, which was awesome. I had a lot of close friends with S30's in LA and helped the LAZC put on quite a few meetups and events. I haven't randomly run into a single S30 up here (hardly ever see any Z33s or Z34s for that matter), which was quite a shock. I very much look forward to meeting more of the ZCCNE & CTZCC members.

I have been driving S30's almost exclusively since I was 21, and just bought my 5th Z, a 78 Black Pearl. It is actually my 2nd Black Pearl. The first one was already far from original when I found it, for better or worse, and I ended putting a lot of track parts on it, so it's lost some of the charm and comfort of a stock Z.

The new one was an amazing find, a local specialty dealer got it from an estate (probably for next to nothing) and was actually very reasonable on the price. I think it was because he normally sells cars worth 10-50x more than 70's Datsuns. I heard about it and was told it was black, but was 100% sure it wouldn't be a Black Pearl. When I got there, I was very surprised to find that not only was it indeed a Black Pearl, but it was also in excellent condition and 100% stock. I've been tearing into it and have found almost nothing I didn't see initially.

Nice to meet you guys, hopefully I'll be able to see more of you in person soon. Here are a few pics of my current stable:

Welcome aboard Forrest! It's very good to have you with us and really thrilling to add a BP to our Cyber-Stable (gives us more braggin' rights, you know). We know there are some spectacular S30s up there in NH and we've seen many of them down here during our events. The ZCCNE is also S30-rich. They have usually set up a whole Zeason of events by now, but they recently lost their VP and event planner (Bill Moreau) unexpectedly so they will take awhile to reorganiZe. They are generally quite active and love to have fun with their Zs. They hosted the national ZCon in Nashua a few years ago and did an outstanding job none of us will ever forget.

Our own CTZCC has recently begun marching in a new direction too, with members themselves planning events and months meetings. All the officers are taking (at least) a year off at the present, following 10 years of nonstop marathon work. Our next 10 years will see more participation by the membership while our leaders happily follow  . We have more than 800 registered members, several of whom own BPs. Our founder and first PreZident Ross Williams still owns his Pearl and you probably know him thru the national Black Pearl factions and website.

We would really enjoy meeting you and enthusiastically invite you to attend any of our meetings or functions you have the time to participate in. If you can't make it to any during the year, by all means do NOT miss our final event of each year, the Annual Fall Outing picnic at Ross' in Darien CT. We generally stuff about 100 members and 70+ Z cars onto his front lawn. Everything in this Club is free; you only pay for the gasoline to get you here.

While we're discussing this, the Z Car Club of Rochester is a very strong and active club also, and they welcome Z drivers from all over the N/E and Canada once each summer for a really fun weekend bash. Car show, big meals, reduced hotel rates, caravan to Watkins Glen International Raceway and fast laps around the road course in your own Z.! All proceeds to charity. That's coming up in July and you can find details in our UPCOMING EVENTS forum, which you should be reading by now anyway.

So you've got lots of Z nuts all over New England anxious to meet you and drool on your carz. I also see a white 280 poking its bumperless nose into the BP picture; whose it that?

Frank T

Thank you very much Frank, I hope to participate in as many Z events as possible. I will hopefully never have to show up to one without a Z (it's kind of depressing after a while). I have indeed seen Ross's car in pictures and I really hope to see it in person. Mine aren't show quality, but they are in decent shape and I love to drive them.

The white car you asked about belonged to my good friend Billy McCaskill before he unfortunately passed away in 2015. He was one of the first Z club members I met after my first Z, a silver 77. He was one of the most dedicated Z club members we had, and despite his health problems he was always offering to help the rest of us work on our cars and giving us troubleshooting advice. He was a very genuine and inspiring guy, and I miss him from the bottom of my heart.

Another good friend of ours received the Chevy 383 that Billy built from scratch and revived it recently, it resides in a new Z to help keep his memory alive.

Maybe I'm just lucky, but all of the Z guys (and gals) have been stellar people and I feel very lucky to have known them. That goes double for Billy.

Wait ~ a Black Pearl and a Yellow Peril?
Actually, that doesn't look like a Stearman, a WACO or a Boeing. I don't know of any 1929 two placer with those upperplane struts grounded btwn the square-cut cockpits like that. Maybe an early Travel Air? What is that kite? I might be able to tell if I could see the undercarriage gear.

And you have a cute girlfriend.

Here's me:

Those are pics of Billy, but I am happy to post some of myself. (Has anyone told you that you look just like a young Sean Connery?)

Here is my old garage in the swamp:

Here is some of the LAZC on a cruise around the LSU lakes - I am a little proud of this pic because I am the one who found all 4 of the other cars for these guys. I sold my blue 76 to the guy with the dark blue car before moving.

Yeah, I've been told I look like Connery, but not the young one. :?

My best friend for a decade was a Creole with NOLA roots going back to before the War of the Great Northern Invasion. He is an MBA but LAWD! Can he COOK!

He's the best BBQ ace I've ever known, and I'm a certified Grill Sergeant. Are your kin from there or were you a transplant?

And do you know anything about that old biplane?

And I zee Karl Walton in here, one of the nicest Z guyz you'll ever meet. He's a solid 280 guy too, altho he just bought a Zx spaceship recently. Say hello to him. Forrest, Karl. Karl, Forrest.

Sean

Yes I have an S30, a 75 that I picked up a few years ago and last fall I picked up a 96 300zx TT but I have not driven it much so far.

Hi Karl! Congrats, I would love to get a nice twin turbo Z32. But first I need a lift, I hear it's not quite as easy to work on as the S30's. How has yours been treating you?

Frank, according to Billy's notation on the photo it is Rob Bach's plane:

Ahhh! It's a home-built twin open-seat hi-wing monoplane. I don't feel bad about not recogniZing it now, thanks. That could have been the forerunner of the Army's first Cessna 0-1 Birddog in 1949. All they did was make it out of aluminum and enclose both cockpits under one glass bubble.

Old aircraft are almost as much fun as old cars are.

You can see how similar they are:

Welcome Forest! It is obvious you suffer from Z fever like the rest of us.

You are now living in one of the prettiest states in the country in my opinion. The seafood will be a bit different (probably a bit more bland than you are used to) but good . I miss the cajun cooking of LA and was especially fond of grilled oysters which I would frequently indulge at Parrain's in Baton Rouge and Drago's outside of NO when I was working down there.

I too look forward to meeting up with you and seeing your cars, the S30's being closest to my heart.

Oh, and Frank looks more like Odd Job than Sean (my opinion) :P

No it is not, even less so when you are not fully mechanically inclined !
So far I have had the timing belt changed as I could not tell if it had been done since new. The parts were 650.00 and the labor (from a friend was 700.00) I had quotes from 1200 - 1900 from local dealers.
There is little about it I would tackle myself. It is well cared for and only has 169xx well documented miles on it. 8)

I agree 100% - every day here feels like a vacation. I love the rural feel, there's hardly any traffic, and the weather is amazing (I absolutely prefer a real winter to a 6 month summer in the swamp.) Sadly, I'm allergic to seafood and fish - so I don't really know what I was missing. Food up here has been fantastic!

I am looking forward to meeting you as well, and seeing your car.

That is very interesting, do you have any small aircraft? I hope to get my license one of these days...just as soon as my car is "done." (haha)
