Hi guys,

I’m new to the club, but have had Z’s for 2+ years now. Was hoping someone has a good cam spray bar for sale, know someplace to buy them new, or have good repair instructions?

I pulled the valve cover off my 73 to check valve clearances and saw the spray bar was warped on the driver side connection. It was bad enough that the cover plate wasn’t sealing and the short section of tube was bent in twords the cam. Probably why it made a loud squeal at +3500 rpm. Luckily the cam and rockers look ok, car was in storage a while before I got it.

Appreciate any info or help
Thanks

Hi Dean, welcome!

Call Vinny Bedini (860)-355-1829 and tell him you're our new member. He is our local Z expert mechanic, has Z parts and drives his own 510.
Then drift on over to our New Member Intros and tell us about your Z (and your 510 if you have one).

Agreed, Vinny is probably your best bet for your oil spray bar. Paul in RI may be another source if he reads this.

On a side note, your post brought back some old memories. I recall having to replace my 240Z cam oil spray bar TWICE many years ago. I've never seen a related post on the subject but I believe some of the earlier Z cars had a quality issue with the spray bar castings that bolted it to the cam bearings. The two failed spray bars that I eventually replaced with a new upgraded design had similar failures in that the tube at the rear of the head (closest to the firewall) became bent inward towards the driver's side. One of them actually had the tube crack and fall down in the head but thankfully didn't cause any damage. Didn't do much for the oil pressure though.

Curious, has anybody else experience this?

Thanks for the recommendations. Paul came thru with a good used spray bar.

Thanks Paul, you’re becoming my go to Parts guy. This is the third time you’ve helped me bring a Z back to life.

Sorry to hijack this into a technical question, but is there any difference among the 240, 260 and 280 spray bars? Different sizes? Higher flow capacity, maybe? Or are they all the same?

After doing some research, it looks like the early spray bars were made using aluminum and steel. When heated they expand at different rates, so after so many heating and cooling cycles they twist and buckle permanently.

The later model spray bars are all steel so they don't have the same issue.

there is a good post on classic z cars;
http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topi ... d-rebuild/

I'm going to follow this guys instructions to fix my twisted one, cant hurt to have an extra on hand. Anyone have a trashed head I could use as a mockup jig?

Yeah Dean, I've got a couple spares in the garage. You can borrow the P90. When might I get it back?

I'm late to reply here, but my 260z had the rear tube bent in to the cam and very loose.

My machist repaired it by installing set screws and idk what else. It wasn't difficult he said and it works perfectly.

FWIW
