Merry Christmas to you as well Frank, and to all CTZCC members! I hope that 2018 will be healthy and happy for all of you!

BTW.....

The history of my 240Z is going to be a feature article in an upcoming issue of CLASSIC MOTORSPORTS MAGAZINE! Publisher Tim Suddard is a long time 240Z fan and did an extensive interview and photo shoot with me and I've spent the last week exchanging more information with the editor in chief. I'm not sure what issue it will be in, but look for it in 2018.

And for those of you who don't subscribe to CLASSIC MOTORSPORTS, you should, it's awesome.

Got to keep promoting the Zs that we love! :D

From Ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1970-Datsun-Z- ... VQ&vxp=mtr

The first-year 1970 Datsun 240Z Coupes have become quite scarce, especially an example in such beautiful condition. It is not a concours-restored car, but it is certainly a very high-quality driver that is priced accordingly. If you have been searching for an early Datsun ‘Z’ car in arguably the best color combination, that can be driven anywhere without worrying about reliability, you have found your car!

I have bought 2 cars (1975 280z & 1996 300zx TT) I found on ebay and I have been happy with what I got in both of them.
I went to see both before I bought and both were as advertised.
I bought both in a direct sale not through ebay.
I look at the listings pretty much every day.
Datsun Z's: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sacat=6 ... ks&_sop=10
The cars are there and listed many times in more then one place.
The 96 was also listed on Hemmings that was where I made contact.

https://zhome.com/History/DesignChanges.htm

The zhome page has gotten really goofy to navigate with age. That link should work for design changes.

Nissan was aloud to sell 1970 October builds as 1971 cars. So title/production and models dates will be mixed up when VINs get up in to the 11 and 12k marks.

I love Z Home and really enjoy getting lost in there each time I dial it up. I find something new almost every time I get in there. Makes me want to build a nice ham & cheeZe sandwich and some hot cocoa and just put my boots up and read it for an hour at a time.

I agree about the VINs. The 1970 "model year" production was so many months behind pre-paid orders, fudging the title date was almost all they could do. At the end of the year I guess the expectant owner (who had paid for his Z four months before) had to chooZe btwn owning an original year model of what was obviously going to be a fabulous automotive sensation, or owning a brand-new car at last-year's price.

And everyone has heard me say this so often they're sick of it, but I'll say it again:
The Datsun/Nissan Z cars are the best-selling sports/GT cars in automotive history. No other sportscars can match their sales numbers. The Z was the very first car in history to sell 500,000 units in its first 10 years of production, and again the first car in history to sell 1,000,000 units in the first 20 years of production.
That out-sells brands which have been around for decades before the Z was introduced; Mercedes, Alfa Romeo, Porsche, MG, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Maserati, Fiat, Triumph, and Austin Healey all pre-date the Z, and have had a 'head start' on sales (some since the 1910s), but our Z was the first car to set those figures and it hasn't been broken yet. The only two cars which duplicate those numbers are the VW and the Mustang. Neither is a sportscar.
We simply drive the most-popular sports/GT car in history, and it all started with the first preproduction photo car-turned-racer, our #00006, and the first titled road-Z, our #00013. 8)

It's always fun reading about such a great car that I was fortunate and lucky enough to buy back in 1971. Frank and John always provide us with great information on the Z's history.

On a curious note, Frank you mentioned that the 1971 model year changed the rear window defroster from vertical to horizontal. My '71 Z was built in June of 1971 and still had the vertical defroster. :? I guess that only adds to the confusion of trying to understand what changes where made during any given Z car model year. What would be great would be a listing of Z car VIN's with the DOM's changes associated with them.

Carl Beck has about the best compendium of that information available, I think. And you're right ~ almost whatever "rules" you learn about the development of the Z, you are able to find some individual aberrations or exceptions.

As you might recall, I owned a Sep/71 parts car some years ago, which I parted-out to Club members only. That experience taught me that even the 1971 cars changed (morphed) from season to season, if not from month to month. Electrical systems changed most; what worked on an early 1971 would not work on a later 1971, and almost nothing from the '71 would work on my early '70. The cars just improved so often, in so many small ways, it was hard to keep up with all the changes. That's why it's so important to specify your car's build date AND vin when ordering replacement parts. I ended up with a garagefull of spare parts I can't use on my car and which don't work on anything but a Sep/71 car.

I can imagine in the heat and fury of trying to build enough 240Zs to meet the insatiable world's demands, that some parts from one car (a rear hatch glass, for example) might be used on a later model rather than wait for the right Widget to be sent up out of the Widget shop. Then there were delivery issues and redesigns (fuel tanks/differentials/drive shafts, etc) which complicated the timely delivery of a car to someone who paid for it long ago and was impatiently camping out at his Datsun dealer, waiting for the truck to bring his Z in. Then there were dealer options and add-ons to jack the sales price and profit, so a lot of different parts were used during the same model year.

We have a 240z in the Club (Cliff's?) with a mid-1970 vin number, but it failed QA and got sent back onto the line for some kind of repair. By the time it actually got approved and released, it was late very 1971 and the car actually got registered as a 1972. That's the most extreme example I know of, but you could look at it from any angle and never identify it as a "1972" car.

So the bottom line is, regardless how much we might think we know about the evolution of these cars, you can always find at least one interesting exception to every rule.

It is important to note that Nissan made changes "on the fly" to the 240Z production and that did not necessarily mesh with "model year" or "series". In order to be more cost efficient, they literally "used up the parts bins" before moving on to a "new and improved" version of certain parts. Such examples would be gas doors with latches, radio style, hub caps, steel wheels, oil pressure gauge (the early ones had a high point of 140lbs, later changed to 90lbs.), consoles, valve covers, etc. So it is impossible to definitively state what EXACT parts the later builds of various series of 240Zs had.

And all 1970-71 240Zs had vertical defrosters, except for the 1969 builds which had NO defroster.

Thanks John. I'll have to go back and dig out the photos of my Sep71 parts car (21,xxx). I'm pretty sure it had horizontal defroster wires and side pillar "ear" vents. The rear hatch was the first part sold off the car - for $20 - to our member Murph for his race car.

I mean, it could use a buffing. This will be a good test of the market.
