My new addition. I always wanted and aircooled Porsche. I still have the 370Z.

1976 Porsche 912E

A friend found it in Bethel CT and bought it before the seller went public with it. While my Z will continue to depreciate...the air cooled Porsche will Appreciate.

Wow Keith - I can't say I know much about the 912E (or Porsches at all, for that matter), but that is one beautiful car. I'm big on colors that 'pop', and that really pops!

Congrats!

Nice   At Lime Rock we have learned that PoorSha people are some the nicest and most-helpful folks you could hope to meet.

When I was in high school I was nuts about anything German and considered myself a "Porsche man" (pronounced Poor-Sha, like Caesar's wife Portia, not "porch" like the veranda you sit on outside your door. It still bothers me to hear that today). I had a beat-up 1959 356 Cabriolet with a rare detachable factory hardtop which was worth as much as the rest of the car. I took a year of high school German just so I could read the owner's manual. I stitched a Porsche badge on my jeans jacket and considered myself quite the corner-killer.

My 356 was a 4-cylinder (like yours) with twin downdrafts (unlike your "Einspritz")(fuel injection) and gave me about 55 hp on a good day. The engine leaked like crazy and needed a quart of Castrol every 3rd day whether I drove the car or not. My buddy and I pulled the engine (by hand) and rebuilt it in his father's garage (only the 2d engine I'd ever rebuilt, and the first without adult supervision). It leaked slightly less when we finished. The car had a wonderful Blaupunkt AM/FM/SW radio (a really big deal in those days) which didn't work, and the gasoline heater set fire to the underside of the seats if I didn't watch it closely. The detachable hardtop needed a minimum of two people to mount or dismount it, and 4 would have made it even easier and saved me a lot of touchup paint.

For all his faults, "Fritz" cornered and stopped wonderfully on his Michelin-X tires and could reach 0-60 in a single afternoon. I really liked the car but it made me work to drive it, rather like singlehandedly sailing a skiff; there was always some busywork to be attended to (usually heater adjustment or firefighting) and little time to relax and enjoy the ride. It gave me a rainy-day transport to/from high school (dry refuge from my Bultaco motorcycle) and I "raced" it for one Street Novice event on the old (first) Watkins Glen track. I pulled into the pits and quit after 14 laps of a 25 lap event, too exhausted to make another lap. Roadracing in August is a hot and sweaty concern, and you need more than 3hrs of sleep the night before, especially if you drive your 'race' car 90 miles to the track and (hopefully) back again. That race (my first) ended my chances at the 1965 SCCA sportscar World Championship, and I did it in a PoorSha.

Sorry to blab on, but you opened a family-sized can of memories for me, thanks. With the exception of the color, this file photo could have been my old 356A ("single grille") PoorSha, wearing the rare detachable hardtop. It would be worth north of $100,000.00 today, even in the shape it was in when I owned it.

I went from PoorShas to Healeys and learned a whole new universe of humiliation. The '60s was a good time to be a teenage gearhead.

I like your car; you'll like it more and more as you learn it. Hopefully Stuttgart has begun printing the owner's manual in English so you don't have to take a year of German to survive the gasoline heater.
Frank

Beautiful car Keith!

May you put many fun miles on it's clock.

Great story about your 356 Frank. Didn't know you had a bathtub with a cover. You missed your calling as a car magazine writer. :)

I saw the photos you posted on Facebook about the Porsche's first car show. That must have been cool to drive up as it's new owner.

So were you able to get the work done that was needed? How did that go?

The 912E goes to the shop tomorrow. This was a show just a few miles from the Marina so I took a slow cruise there, Car runs pretty good under 3K Rpms. Need to have the that looked at. And it needs a new suspension pan welded on, Common issue for 911/912. I learn more what it needs tomorrow or Tuesday.

A bunch of Porsche fans came over to talk about it.
