This Friday September 8 is the fabulous Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival held right in the Village of Watkins Glen NY, in conjunction with the Vintage Grand Prix races at Watkins Glen International Raceway. It's a celebration of everything to do with historic and classic sports cars. There are day long events, with something for everyone, food vendors, merchants, shopping, parades of classic cars and more! I'm pleased to announce that my 1970 240Z and ZCCR VP Mike Noonan's 1990 300ZX Twin Turbo have been accepted into the prestigious Concours d'Elegance Show held in the Watkins Glen State Park. It's an exclusive invitational event with only 49 cars gaining entry. Mike and I will carry the Datsun/Nissan banner proudly in representing with the world's best! I'd encourage any of you who are able, to attend this event on Friday in Watkins Glen. Tens of thousands of spectators taking in the most unbelievable classic sports cars in the world! Hope to see you there. More on the event here: http://grandprixfestival.com/

Never attended one of these. Please tell me they don't make contestants park their classic cars in the dirt, under sappy pine trees?

Jay, this is actually 1/2 the distance from you (150m) than it is to us (300m). The town of WG is where the race actually began (1948?) before they built the track. They raced thru the streets for a couple years, with spectators sitting on haybales along the sidewalks like the European Grands Prix. It's a nifty place to visit and walk thru. Crowded, but nifty.

Not at all Frank. The show is in the Watkins Glen State Park on pavement. Very scenic. I'll post pictures next week.

Also, the entrants do two parade laps on the "original" Grand Prix race course which does go through the village itself. Very cool!

True, but still far enough that with two small kids, limited options for babysitters, etc... You get the idea.

My wife and I actually spent our wedding weekend in Watkins Glen, that's the only time I've ever been...and i'd love to go back. It's a very neat town, and I did not realize they raced through the streets. So cool!

Also John, your Z looks absolutely stunning.

I love that color and the stance is perfect!

My 240Z represented well at the Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival's Concourse 'd elegance, taking home the coveted "People's Choice" award, selected by participants and attendees. The Z beat out other marques such as Ferrari, Porsche, Jaguar, Aston Martins and gorgeous American muscle cars. It was quite an honor to be chosen by fellow car enthusiasts! A beautiful 1955 Porsche 356 roadster was selected as "Best of Show" and was well deserving. It was quite a thrill to parade a DATSUN 240Z before the crowd to receive the award.

For those of you on Facebook, here is a link to a photo album of the event:

DATSUN RULES! :D

YeeeeeeHAAAAAH!!! Way to go, John! Congratulations.

I really enjoy watching the faces of the spectators while they examine your trophy Z. Some of them are "remembering" and others are "learning" and daydreaming about the legendary car they have heard so much about. The same thing seems to happen to Thor each time he takes his 240 out of the garage in Germany.

There's just no way to know how many spectators went home that day, vowing to "get me one of them Datsun Zs" as soon as possible.

How was the street tour? Could you picture yrslf making 90mph thru the streets?

Frank, we did a "recreation" of the original Grand Prix circuit, 6.5 miles through the winding roads around Watkins Glen and through the heart of the village. The elevation changes and twisty roads were a blast! The pace car was a 2012 Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Gull Wing, which led a conservative pace through the course. But when he did open it up a bit, the Z had no problem keeping up, especially on the curves. :D

All in all, the Watkins Glen Vintage Festival is an awesome event. It was fun to represent Datsun, especially among cars that cost triple or more than the 240Z when new. I strongly recommend that you all make visit to the Vintage Festival, always held the Friday after Labor Day.
