Had my 280ZX on a battery maintainer for the last month while the car was off the road. New Battery 3 months ago. Fired it up Friday, and it started and drove like a champ. However, the power windows didn't work. No sign of blown fuse and the only other issue was a radio that was maxxing at 10% of normal volume. Lights, etc. all fine.
I drove for a mile or so in the 18 degree air with the windows down, and low and behold the window motors started working perfectly. The radio is a little louder, but still not normal.
Any idea as to what could have caused both window motors to fail until the car was driven a short distance?

Very strange. Id have to attribute it to the cold somehow. Corroded connections and resistance to the parts?

By tbe way, disconnect the positive cable to the battery when leaving it on a battery tender.

Always used the battery maintainer plugged in to the car's cig lighter. Never disconnected the battery. I wonder if this is a mistake.?.

Wow, I don't think I'd want to send current through my cars electrical system via the cigarette lighter. I'm sure that the systems wiring at that source wouldnt be good to handle prolonged AC current.

A true battery tender connects right to the battery.

OK, you've talked me out of using the cig lighter socket, although I have been doing this for years. Don't want to burn down the car or the house. Interesting that my 560SL won't accept a charge through the lighter socket. Just thought she was a teutonic snob.

No, she's probably protected against two-way current.

I agree with John; I wouldn't charge my Z battery thru the lighter circuit, no matter how lucky you've been up to now. I don't know the ZX wiring circuitry, but I sure wouldn't do that to an S30.

I don't believe it could possible hurt anything by charging the battery through the lighter socket. The lighter would draw far more current than than a battery maintainer could put out. Even if you were using a heavy duty charger the worst that would happen is you would blow the lighter fuse. Your house is safe.
