240z's never had power steering. You'll have to create your own by modifying a PS rack out of another car. HybridZ.org has a few threads about it.

I believe so. Then again I didn't read too far into it since it wasn't one of those imperative things for me.

Another modification some people were talking about was an ELECTRICAL assist power steering that could be modded to fit the S30 Z, but again, I don't think the car needs any power assist.

Here's a weird electric PS kit recently discussed by JDM:

No personal experience with this.

Even if shod with big rubber, I can't imagine a 240Z needing power steering. Sounds like a potential PITA in the making!

Jim,
If you're 72+, and paralyzed from the waist down, I guarantee you, you'd need power steering in a Z.

Irv, nothing personal was intended - I was seeing a potentially troublesome retrofit to a car not designed for PS. None the less, you have my apology for a poorly worded comment.

I'm trying to picture the considerably siZeable PITA involved in swapping out standard Rack and Pinion steering for a power steering unit. I guess you'd have to scarf one off a 280Z, then pull everything out of the 240 to install it. That might (might) include the engine. As long as you had the block out, you could rehab the engine bay and kill any rust hiding in there.

The 'crossmember' you refer to ~ not sure they differed from 240 to 280, but the steering rack would certainly need to be swapped. I don't suppose it would be any big deal to install the actual pump, hoses and belts to the engine, except that you'd have to make sure your crank pulley had a 'spare' belt groove. Your car already has A/C, so maybe the pulley already has a PS groove.

Frankly, I've never before heard of that electric PS assist system, and can't picture how it would work. Has anyone else ever seen one or maybe driven a car with one on it? It appears to fit INSIDE the cabin, under the dash.

This is the best info I could find on such a system:

http://www.aa1car.com/library/steering_ ... ectric.htm

I've started a separate Post on this subject under the Tech Talk Forum, just to zee what information we can gather there.

Frank

hey irv, just a thought, why don't you consider trading your car for a 280zx with an automatic. i know it is not the same car, but it would do everything you would need it to do, and have more room for you, as it is wider and easier to get in and out of, and it would have power steering. you can hotrod that car just as easily as your old 240 and it would be more convenient for you. you can make it handle just as good as the old car and just as fast, but ride better.take a look at some of our member rides and see if you like the look, they are not that far off of the look you already have. the hand controls would work better also. just a thought! mike

Well good thought Mike, but the man has a dream and must follow through, I think it can be done, and now that I see that electric option, that looks like a cool way to go. Well since I gave Mike, (zman) my last crossmember, (that I know about, ), I can't see if the ZX rack will fit. When there's a will, there's a way, thats what I say. :D
