Hey all.
Im from Australia.
over here we call it the 240 ZED
i believe you guys call it the 240 ZEE

what do you call it where you are????

what about the ZX....

we call it ZED EX.
do u call it ZEE EX???

ur right there Frank.. we even say Zee when we say the alphabet..
but for some reason we always called them ZED.
i think it sounds tougher...:)

I thought in the US, a ZED was Z car with a chevy 350 in it. I just say the abbreviated form, "Z"

"Zed" is the french pronounciation of the letter "Z".

Wow, that's right! Can't imagine what connection there could be btwn the Aussies and the French, but you're quite right and that is probably the source of that term. Odd, huh?

Here in New England we have club members from Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New York and New Jersey. When we have a big event like our car show we get guys from all these states gathered in one parkinglot. I suppose all us Yanks sound alike to you Aussies, but to us we have DRAMATICALLY different accents, and we laugh at each other about it. It's really funny how different states pronounce our vowels so differently, when we don't live even 200 miles apart!

And HEY ~ don't pick on the Kiwis! I served with some ANZACs in Nam and grew quite fond of those blokes! They raise funny looking cows and some of their sheep dogs are smarter than their kids, but they're solid brave, they are!

And PS~ yes, you're right about pronouncing it AL LOO MIN UM or AL UU MIN EE UM, but since we're all working with Datsuns, we can pronounce it the same way: "RUST".

Australia and the New Zealanders give it too each other..but we love it.
I wouldnt dream of insulting one in truth..we're all brothers in arms..

Yes good ol' aluminium..or just metal for that fact..
rust is always bad but if u spend the time and fix it properly it should be right...
One of my mates just totallt ripped down a 240 and had the bare shell acid dipped to get everything off of it.. rust included...
Yeah.. we found quite a few more holes after that..hehehehhe..

The early z's r made from really thin metal. so its quite easy to do damage to em. Makes 'em lighter but not as strong as the American counterparts eg Mustang...
Its a good idea not to get Datsuns SANDBLASTED for this reason..
The blasting process can leave indents in your metal work. Not a problem for these old Yank tanks with quarter inch thick metal..
Acid dipping or something similar is all that is needed.. besides, all we want is it back to metal right!!....

Wow ~ you are so right. We have several members who have stripped early Z cars down to the shell (I will try to enclose a picture of Dave Russell's very early 240Z with this entry, if I can find it). Once the entire rust is removed, the cars look like swiss cheese. I own a restored 1970 car (#2807) and an original 1971 car (#41421). The previous owners tried their best to save them from the Tinworms, and the 1970 car is solid again. The '71 car was hand-painted with RustOleum and left outside for 17yrs. It didn't save it. The car is complete and original, but so badly rusted underneath that it would cost more to restore than it would ever be worth.

Let's see if I can find a picture of Dave's 1970 car #000958......

Yep it is a huge job.. Great pic.. i noticed also on the pic that it has no luggage/tool boxes behind front seat. Easy way to tell an early from a late Z.
I think it would be impossible or very very expensive to restore a Z to NO Rust condition.. Its what we all want but as can see, the job is massive..
TReat what ya can, and enjoy the car while its going...

Just my opinion, but I think the s130's have thinner metal than the s30's. Something to do with the economy back then I suppose. Now looking at the pic. above, I was in N.Y. hand delivering some big parts to a guy who lived down the road from my mother, convienent, and he had a stripped down a 280. I liked his idea of taking 2 engine stands with a little welding fabrication, and then mounted one in the rear and one in the front, and could very easily spin the Z car all the way around. I know they make thes thing, but I give someone like that more credit to think outside the box. I will use this idea when I'm ready for the 79 restoration, this will be my first total tear down and reconstruct. Yea look for it 20 years from now. :)

Hey Paul....
Im not getting you on s130 and s30 thing????
Do you mean the Nissan designation number. eg HS30 RS30??

In Australia im sure we only ever got the HS30 240Z.
I think u can get a HSL30??? i think the L is luxury but wasnt available in Aus. It might be a Jap only thing.
We also get the RS30. 260Z 2 seater.
GRS30 - 260Z 2+2

That's just the short term,(s30,s130,) it is HS30, and HS130. The R is for right hand drive, like a RS30 or RS130. I'm a little foggy on this, but I think that's how it goes. If over there the ZX is HSL30, or RSL30, that might be correct, the L is for luxury, for here the X means luxury. Hense the ZX is more luxurios than the Z.
