Did you know that Connecticut was the first state in the nation to have a speed limit?
It was enacted back on 21May 1908.

113 years ago (today) Connecticut became the first STATE to set a speed limit. It was 12 miles an hour in town and 15 miles an hour in the country.

The very first speed limit in North America was set in the tiny NYC community of New Amsterdam way back in 1652. That law read "No wagons, carts, or sleighs shall be run, rode or driven at a gallop." The fine was two Flemish pounds (about $150 in today’s money). Connecticut was the first STATE to adopt the idea, when the new motor-cars began to appear on public streets and roads.

The article doesn't mention it, but I assume that created the need for the first speedometers too? And speed signs?

Wow that's cool, good stuff!

Steep fine back then for speeding. Wonder how they checked your speed back then?

Any of you guys remember the CT State Troopers in their blue Fords with the large speedometer mounted on the roof? Nobody dared to pass them! Had to be on the parkways...there was no I95 or I91 yet!

There was no center rail, only trees. Some may remember the signs posted along the Parkways...Min and Max speeds, "keep right except to pass", "no passing on right", "He who has one for the road gets Trooper for chaser".
