We all remember singer-guitarist Glen Campbell, the Scottish lad who was born in Arkansas and became a world-class guitar virtuoso. In the 1960s he moved to LA and became one of two top studio lead guitar players (beside Teddy Tedesco) for the professional studio recording group who are now known as "The Wrecking Crew". They were the back-up musicians responsible for playing most of the TV and Hollywood theme songs and commercial jingles of the era, as well as hundreds of the top-chart rock and roll songs we remember from those years. Most R&R bands didn't actually play their own music for studio recordings; they hired the world-class 'Wrecking Crew' to play it for them, and the results were nearly 100% guaranteed hits.

In the late '60s Campbell struck out on his own, recording over 80 albums, a dozen hits and even having his own TV show. He played roles on TV and on screen and became a household name. Like several of "The Wrecking Crew" musicians, (such as Tommy Tedesco, Hal Blaine, Carol Kaye, Leon Russell and others) Glen Campbell was making more money than the President of the United States years before the public even heard of him. Only after his death was it revealed that Glen could not read a single note of music, instead relying solely upon hearing a song played or hummed once, capturing it, and improving it in his own inimitable way. Like the legendary composer/director Arturo Toscanini, Glenn was probably a musical Savant.

Here's an example of that talent; Glen plays a piece which he heard in his childhood and determined to teach himself to play it by ear; Rossini's "William Tell Overture".

In 2017 Campbell died of Alzheimer's disease and the country mourned the loss of one of our truly outstanding world-class instrumentalists.

I reported earlier about THE WRECKING CREW in case you've never heard of them. Pour yrslf a cup before you begin this lengthy story, it took me weeks to research it. Just trying to keep y'all from going insane without the Zs over the winter!
