I seem to recall recently reading that a single WWII piston driven fighter plane was modified to be the very fastest prop-plane in world history, and assigned to hunt the new jets over Germany. Does anyone remember what it was? There was only a single model of it ever produced.
I'll have to research that. The Mustang was the fastest factory flier, but this other one (possibly a Thunderbolt?) was beefed up as a jet interceptor. Ahl be Bach.
