This just in:

James Bond's Goldfinger movie used several 'Silver Birch' Aston Martin DB5s for filming. The original 'gadget car' (chassis #DP/216/1 with machine-guns, tire shredders, smoke screen, oil spray, rear bullet shield, extending bumper over-riders, ejector seat, bulletproof glass, homer tracking device and revolving number plates, naturally), was too heavy to actually drive in the movie, so they used a pair of normal 'road cars' for the driving scenes.

One of the 'road cars' (DB5/1486R) from the 1964 Bond Goldfinger film has traded hands several times since the movie and has appeared in other Bond films over the years. It is headed back to auction again this summer. It has an expected Reserve of about $5M USD.

But that's not the big news.

The original 'effects car' (chassis #DB5/DP/216A, commonly called "BMT-216A" for its license plate number) was "stolen" ( ) in 1997 and remains missing. Aston Martin received that effects car back after the 1964 movie, removed all of Q's war gadgets, and re-sold the car as a 'used' but streetable DB5 with a lot of provenance. It was bought for $275,000 by a private individual who promptly re-installed all the Bond gadgets and showed it as "the most-famous car in the world" for about 25 years. It was then "stolen" from a hi-security Florida hangar with armed guards around it in the summer of '97, and remains missing to this day. The insurance company paid off the agreed value of the car at $4.2M USD in 1998 ($13.8M in today's money).

But that's not the big news, either.

The BIG news is that Aston Martin now intend to build 28 identical gadget-laden replicas of Bond's DB5 #DP216/1 and sell 25 of them to the public at $3.5M USD each.

The line forms here at my house. Y'all can fall in behind me and wait your turn with credit cards in hand. :D

Next up for sale, Dr. Who's police call box?

UPDATE: It's here!

After holding our collective breath for over two years, the first Goldfinger DB5 has finally been completed:
