Ah! Healeys! I expected to see 240zs or 3500GT Masers when I got to the picture.
Three right-hand drive 100-4s with their windscreens completely removed, not just lowered. Dedicated racers! The Healy "Hundred" was guaranteed to do 100mph (my first would manage 90) and was engineered to match the dominant XK-120 Jags in everything but top speed. Two of my friends had 120s and any of my Healeys would stay with them on curves and out-acellerate them up to about 3rd gear, when the big Jag's 3.8L DOHC six began walking away from my little 2.5L pushrod OHV 4-cyl. But I had electric on-demand Laycock-de-Normanville overdrive on my cars, a very good unit which effectively gave me 8 forward speeds and two reverse (
) and the 120s were straight 4-spd boxes so that helped me some. And I was vastly lighter than they were so my brakes were better than theirs (drums all around, both cars). And by the way in case you ever wondered but didn't ask, the Healeys and the 120s were both pedestal pedal cars. My MG was a pendulum pedal and of course the Z is.My little Austin Healey 100-4s were a lot smaller than any of the big Jaguar XK series cars. Some of my dates had to ride on the fenders.
What a thrill to see these old flicks! You need to compile and publish these for us! Enough of us might buy a book of them to help you finance your next restoration.
You know, this photo is actually a priceless example of pure British sportscar racing at its finest; true British cars and a true British track at the height of the Golden Age of sportscar racing (1950s). Priceless.
