Astons are one of my dream cars. Their heritage is long and proud. They remain one of the last front-engine-rear-drive exotics available. Even Maserati have long ago gone rear-engined.

Aston's heyday cars (for me) were *most* (not all) of the hand-made David Brown series sport/racers. In the late 1950s their DBR-1 Grand Prix racer was the only marque able to beat Ferrari and they did it repeatedly with Sir Stirling Moss at the wheel. The "Moss" gearbox was the weak point of that car and the limiting factor for winning more championships. If a DBR-1 could finish a race, it usually won.

The DB4 series (especially the DB4GT and the DB4GT Zagato) were the pinnacle of the age, and James Bond made the DB5 the 'most famous car on earth' in Goldfinger.

All the 1958-1970 DB series used W.O.Bentley's wonderful straight-6 dual overhead cam triple side draft carb "hemi" engines. Standard GT power was about 240bhp at the flywheel, not unlike a built 280Z today. Top street horsepower for the DB4GT/Z was over 300, while the DB4GT/Z racers squeezed out even more than that with cams, Webers, dual ignition and compression changes.

Following Rolls Royce and Bentley's lead, Aston never published the actual horsepower of their street cars. They flat-out lied, exaggerating the top speed of their heavy GT road cars, but their track-prepared racers were screamers which were very hard to catch.

Altho today's fiber-bodied turbocharged 500hp V8 and 700hp V12 Astons would run circles around any of the older cars, I would still fight my way to the head of the line for the 1960s David Brown GTs.

Hear Moss driving the LeMans-and Sports Car Championship-winning 1959 DBR-1 here: https://youtu.be/rSRz2TSaPyo

Thanx Karl ~ a subject which touches my heart.

The Aston Martin body designs were among my favorite, second only to the E-Type Jag in my book. Gorgeous cars!

I agree. I dated a girl for 3 years in highschool because her upper lip reminded me of a DB4GT grille. 8) What a kisser she was!

HAHA! '58 Edsel. Two seniors in my school owned one when I was a freshman. I took over their morning paper route from them and they were both in my Scout Troop so I knew them fairly well.
The older kid bought the car to get them both to school for their senior year after their family moved just outside town. The younger kid ran to the Salvation Army thrift shoppe and bought a number of old mink stoles, which he then wired into the open oval of the grille. Use your imagination. 8)

The principal tossed the car off school grounds, saying it looked "suggestive" (that was exactly the point, Duhh). The older kid rented a parking space directly across the street from the principal's office window and parked the Edsel facing the school every day. Anybody who visited the principal's office (parents, teachers, Nuns, School Board Directors, students, etc) sat in front of the principal's desk and stared out the window behind him wondering if they were actually seeing what they thought they were......

 That's an entirely different story.

My first year of college was at a small university in the South. Everyone had heavy accents, including our new Dean of Students. He was informally introducing a new, pretty, young teacher to a small group of male visitors in the open hallway one day and, as a means of generating their interest in her, the Dean tried to mention that she drove a unique Volvo P1800 which was painted pink.

His mispronunciation of "she has the purdiest little pink Volvo you'd ever want to see" got his face slapped and the new teacher stomped off!

I was only a few feet away and could hardly stop laughing.
