Does anyone remember Fluoroscopes? These things saturated you with enough XRays to let you watch the bones in your feet move in real-time and were free to use in shoe stores. In the late 1950s a drug store near us had one in the corner with a sign that read, "see your foot bones free". No adult supervision was offered. The store didn't even sell shoes. As you can imagine, there was always a line of kids waiting their turn to self-radiate for free. We all played outside back in those days, so our tan hid any radiation burns.

The Fluoroscope was in a corner between two SHOOT THE BEAR and SHOOT THE MOTHER IN LAW electronic marksmanship games. Kids fired an electronic rifle at a bear (or an old woman) moving back and forth across the target range. The bear had glass receptors on it's shoulders and when you hit a receptor, the bear turned around and ran in the opposite direction. Same with the mother in law, who ran around the dining room table. The shooting games cost a nickel; the Fluoroscope was free. All were clearly intended to be considered healthy entertainment for young Leaders of the 20th Century while suggesting the proper responses to bears and mothers in law.

The measured X-Ray splashing in all directions around the Fluoroscope was dangerous out to a wide diameter. At a time when Xray techs hid around the corner of a lead-lined booth while they zapped you for a micro-second with a tiny bit of radiation to take a still Xray of your latest broken bone, Fluoroscopes made it possible for you to share an incredibly strong dose of radiation with your kid sister and friends for 20 seconds and frag innocent bystanders.....for free! After bathing in 20 seconds of hi-yield radiation watching your own feet, you traded places with another kid and took your turn self-radiating while watching his feet for another 20 seconds. These wonderful boxes were as popular as water fountains on a hot day in the park, and kids lined up for them just the same way. Small groups of kids often just hung around close to the box until it was their turn again.

Eventually someone (probably a mother) stopped and pondered the wisdom of intentionally Nuking our kids with enough X-rays to show the bones thru their skin, and Fluoroscopes quietly faded away.

And the ever-popular but politically questionable SHOOT THE MOTHER IN LAW game: https://youtu.be/IBhsDFtngE0

Just exactly how did we survive the 1950s?
