The year before the United States was born, on 10Nov1775, the Continental Congress ordered the formation of ".. two battalions of Marines..." to serve aboard warships of our newly-formed standing Navy. Congress commissioned Captain Samuel Nichols as the first Marine (and later as the first Commandant of the Marine Corps), to recruit "able bodied seamen" to become Marines. He set up recruiting efforts in Philidelphia's Tun Tavern and in the Canestoga Waggon Inn of that city.

The Navy is our eldest branch of service, followed by the Army, followed by the Marines (just a few weeks later) and then the Coast Guard ("Life Saving Service"). Heavier-than-air aircraft, of course, weren't used until WWI and the Army Air Corps didn't become the Air Force until after WWII.

US Marines have fought in every major and most minor wars and conflicts our nation has engaged in, since 10Nov75. Today marks the 241st Birthday of our beloved Marine Corps.
OoooRahhhh.
