Wow. The 917s were absolutely incredible cars, which won just about everything they entered after they got their aerodynamics right in the first year of production. One of the fastest machines ever sanctioned to race in the history of motorsports.

Over the span of their use, their flat-12 engines grew from 600+ hp to well over 1,000hp, with astounding performance; 0-60 in under 3 seconds, 0-100 in under 6 seconds, top speed over 250mph. Just incredible machines, which actually could have made use of faster tracks if the world had offered them at the time.

I have watched 917s race twice; once at The Glen and again in a vintage race at LRP, when the wonderful Jaguar XJ220 blew itself up trying to beat it.

How weird to see Pedro Rodriguez alive on film, after all these years. His younger brother Richardo was killed during practice at age 20, and Pedro also died racing in the early '70s. I met him at The Glen in the '60s and shook hands as he autographed my F-1 Grand Prix racing program. I remember he asked me how old I was ~ when I told him '16' he just smiled. Never knew why.

Oh how I lust after these first-gen 917's - especially the 'short tail' K Gulf cars. This is one of the only vintage racers I haven't seen in-person. If only they would bring back the Rennsport reunion to Lime Rock....sigh. And to see one come up for (public) sale is a rare occurrence. I am hoping the Powerball comes through tonight - and if so, I will be taking the redeye out to Canepa.

Face it guys, none of our wives would tolerate this beast in the family. I know it's FARRR beyond my driving abilities, so it would sit (basically unused and therefor wasted) in my front yard for passers-by to gawk at, and for real gear-heads to suspect of being a 'Volkswagen kit car'. :( I mean, you can't really drive it to work or church, or Stop & Shop, and there's just no place to take it for Sunday drives, and every State Trooper would know you by name, rank and service number if you drove it anyplace on the highways.

The Germans were thinking a decade ahead of themselves during the 1960s and '70s, and created incredible machines which were sometimes more aircraft than automobile. They created a series of smaller cars capable of beating the larger Ferraris, Fords and Lolas in the hands of expert racers. Please note the air-escape slot ahead of the number "9" on the hood ~ an early use of exhausting cooling air as soon as it has flowed thru the front oil cooler radiator. Incoming air is carried on-board for less than 3ft, then thrown into the airstream and re-used to help press the car nose down onto the track.
The year before this car got aerodynamically sorted, Porsche (say Por-SHA) won The 'Ring 1-2-3-4-5 with the 'lesser' Porsche 908. Simply incredible, thunderous race machines.

Hey Frank, were you at Watkins for the 6 Hour and the Can-Am in 1969?
Old photo of the 3 - 908 winning Porsches in formation on the last few laps of the 1969 Watkins Glen 6 Hour.
Now if I hadn’t been slightly in the “weeds” at the end of the race I might just have focused the dam camera!
Also the 4th place Matra…..what a great sound they had.

1st Siffert / Redman Porsche 908/02 Porsche of Austria
2nd Elford / Attwood Porsche 908/02 A. G. Dean Racing Ltd.
3rd Buzzetta / Lins Porsche 908/02 Porsche of Austria
4th Servoz-Gavin / Rodriguez Matra MS650 Matra of France

Yes Lime Rock/Porsche need to do the Rennsport reunion, it was stunning! Colin I don’t know how you missed it!

The older one.

:D The '69 Watkins Glen 6-hr was the last race I attended before leaving for 'Nam! What memories! My leave ended two days after the race and I was on the plane. I dropped my Yamaha in the infield, tearing off a muffler and breaking the headlamp, and had to ride 90 miles home in the dark.

What a great time those days were to be a gearhead!!! There were SO many wonderful cars, race teams and drivers in those days. I feel so.....isolated...from the sterilized, computer-driven corporate race scene today. They've even changed The Glen since then. I used to know the whole course (but it didn't keep me from getting 'lost' and running out of roadway when I actually drove it).

We really need to share that campfire. Such stories.
