Sid Ceasar is dead at age 91. WHO???? If you grew up in the 1950s and '60s, you don't have to ask. Along with "Uncle Milty" (Milton Berle) and Red Skelton, Sid was truly "Mister Television". He was one of the very small handful of pioneers who made TV such an essential part of American life. Most of the hair I have left is gray so of course I remember him. A true comic genius. |

Sid Caesar was a man of many languages. He could speak what sounded like an unfamiliar, but recognizable tongue and if you listened carefully, English came out of it. The 50's were good television times. Families watched clever, clean and creative entertainment together. Multiple tv sets in a home was unheard of. We knew a television set in the bedroom made you sterile. And, sit too close...never! |

Frank - one more to add to your list on the 1st post would have to be Jackie Gleason on the Texaco Hour. As Jim H. and Alan said - truly a golden period for family entertainment. I miss them all. |

And speaking of families... and most of all "I Remember Mama". A great tv show with Peggy Wood and an even better movie with Barbara Bel Geddes. |

Like so many early TV pioneers, Sid was Jewish. Raised in NYC, he was fascinated by people from all over the world. He worked at his father's deli restaurant in multicultural Yonkers and grew up listening to the intonations and cadences of various languages. From that young experience he developed his own "double talk". http://youtu.be/2SqEmkwADmY He also sang a 'double talk' song, which I'm unable to find. Just as well ~ it used to make me laugh so hard I couldn't breathe. |
