OK Ross, it's been a month. Are you a GoPro expert yet?

Well I'm not an expert yet but I did go out and buy the needed SD card and got the thing up and running. Took some videos and pictures with it. The videos are very high quality but you would not want to use this camera for "family" videos because of its wide angle lens. The videos have a significant fish-eye effect which bends / distorts scenes at the edges. When I researched why this happens it kind of makes sense. The GoPro is really meant to be an outdoor action camera, which will capture panoramic backgrounds and landscapes. The benefit is that you get a 170 degree view and for many activities, like surfing, the result is phenomenal. So I need to mount it to my helmet next spring when going out on a motorcycle ride. Or mount it to the Z when going on a fun run. I think that is the sweet spot of what this camera is designed to do. It comes with a case that can be made to be 100% waterproof - so maybe I'll take it fishing with Graham next year and mount it to the net to see what the fish is thinking just prior to being pulled into the boat!

And uh, what do you strap it to when you're surfing?

No surfing for me. I would end up as food for some large fish!

So, after a half-year of experimentation and experience, would you recommend the GoPro to a novice like myself, or do you think I might do better with something more advanced?

What have you used yours for so far (that you can admit)?

Frank,

I would definitely recommend the GoPro. The quality is so good that I believe it has become the default camera of choice for outdoor enthusiasts. As with any technology, be prepared to read lots of instructions with very small print to get it up and running. I've used it a bit on my Z but am looking forward to mounting it on a motorcycle helmet this year.

Also, by the time you get all of the accessories that you need, like the SIM card and specialized mounts, it's not cheap (some mounts are included). Unless you use it a lot, which I don't, it's hard to justify it from a monetary perspective. But it's loads of fun and I'm not getting any younger, so I guess I would do it again!

I've heard that you plan to break Fearless Felix's record jump from space by doing it inside your 240Z. If so, GoPro is definitely the camera you want with you (along with a really big parachute).

Here is the GoPro Fearless Felix video: http://gopro.com/videos/video-of-the-day/2012/10/19/
