For those among us who have Scottish blood (or just love bagpipes), be aware that the 2013 Annual Highland Games is just around the corner, on 13Oct13.

I attend this annually and am never disappointed. Situated in rural Scotland, CT, these games have been in effect for as long as I've lived in this state. Last time I attended, there were 17 pipe bands assembled from all over the region.

Working sheep dogs, bagpipe competition, Highland Dance competition, Harp performances, and the complete Scottish Highland farm games (bale toss, caber toss, mace toss, etc) are followed by the Massed Bands, curling your toes with some of the most thrilling music you'll ever hear live.

Individual Scottish folk bands play and sing ballads and dirges all day on-stage in the big covered tent. If you've never heard bagpipes play Rock n Roll, this is an experience! Scottish Lassies sit and tell ageless Scottish folk tales to fascinated kids gathered on the floor around them in the barn.

Thousands of people attend simply to shop at the Scottish Fair, an assembly of over 50 separate tent shops, displays and exhibits. If you've never eaten haggis or steak and kidney pie, here's your chance to stand in line and buy a plate. Ladies, if you thrill to seeing 500 burly young Scotties strutin' aboo't in their Kilts wearing swords on their hips, this is the place for you. Anyone needing a true wool Highland blanket for those cold winter months, this is the cheapest place to find one. (Or two!) Tons of jewelry, Bro'oches, knives, swords, Dirks & Daggers, Sgian-Dubh, Claymores and shields, tartan cloth by the yard, knitting wool by the skein, tartan scarves and shoulder capes, Tam o'shanters, berets, Glengarries, bagpipe repair, Kilt accoutrements, traditional scottish food, music and folklore are here in overdose quantities. Christmas gifts abound!

Separate family Clan tents stand shoulder to shoulder, each with an historic documentary of their Scottish family name and background, family crest, and flag. If you have a Gaelic family name, locate your family's heritage here! Don't be surpriZed to see Bryan Little in the midst of them, or Bob Sharp, Ross Williams or Scotty Cole from RDZ.

But you don't have to be any more Scottish than Gary Tilinski to enjoy this thrilling exhibition. All the nations of The Isles are represented here. You can get handmade craft items from Ireland, Wales, England, the Isle of Man, Guernsey, etc. You should dress rugged, since it's all oo'tdoors in a wide open field and tents, barns and trees are your shelter from the beautiful fall countryside. Many bring folding chairs or stools or just sit on the rock walls to watch the pipe band competition and the thrilling Massed Bands at the end of the day. But you'll be walking around most of the time, from tent to tent and exhibit to exhibit.

What this ISN'T is a car show or a dog show. You park in an open field and walk in, so don't bring your classic Z. Dogs aren't welcome due to the working sheepdogs which protect their own flocks and consider outsider dogs a threat.

'Tis a wee bit o' Scotland here in Scotland CT, well worth your admission and more fun than you'll forget in your lifetime. For goodness sake, bring your camera.
