The engine from your 11/9 post. AC AEX93. It took a while to find this one.

:D People, we have a repeat winner! Mike is right yet again.

This is the wonderful 130hp German BMW 2.0L (1971cc) long-stroke, "semi-hemi" pushrod ohv 6 cylinder engine of 1956.

After WWII, the German defenses were somewhat disabled, allowing Allied countries to sort of "borrow" or "copy" (steal) some of their best designs. One of the better power-to-weight ratio automotive engines in the world at that time was this BMW gem.

England's AC cars had a great little chassis called the ACE (roadster) or ACECA (in coupe form) which was very popular, but the AC engine left a lot to be desired. AC race driver Ken Rudd simply stole this wonderful German design from BMW's 326 model and dropped it into his AC racer chassis in 1956. The result was an instant race winner and AC cars blatantly took the BMW copyright into their own lair in Bristol and produced the AC Bristol ACE and ACECA cars beginning in 1957.

With this powerful new hi-torque powerhouse, the AC cars won races thru the remainder of the 1950s and well into the 1960s. Texas chicken farmer Carroll Shelby raced one and, wanting even more power, used the platform to create the V8 powered Cobra.

Well done, Mike ~ you need a bigger trophy shelf!

  !!! HOLY CROW!!!
Exactly correct AGAIN, Mike!
Jupiter!

This is the TS-325-1 gasoline-fueled jet engine made by Continental Aircraft Company in the very early 1960s for a helicopter which never got produced. The engine itself was grand ~ it could wind to nearly 60,000 rpm, made 350hp and weighed only 170lbs ~ but the aircraft itself had significant problems and the design was scrapped before production. That left Continental with 3 of these prototype engines and nothing to do with them.

Along came the HOWMET corporation, which was looking for ways to enter into Sports and Grand Touring racing. Intrigued by the extreme power-to-weight-ratio and small size of this jet, they envisioned a jet-powered sports GT car.

Early tests were problematic, but eventually HOWMET built a custom frame and body around this jet, and the HOWMET TX (Turbine Experimental) did pretty well during several races. In big-name events (LeMans, Indianapolis, Daytona, etc), the car DNF'd for silly little reasons ~ wheel bearings, fuel transfer valves, etc. The engine itself only gave a single problem with the waste gate (that 3rd "exhaust pipe" sticking up) which they fixed pretty quickly. The HOWMET was capable of stunning acceleration and blinding speed if given enough room, and the single-speed gearbox meant almost anyone could drive one.

Insignificant things kept breaking tho, and kept the car from great victories. It only won one race (setting several records in the process) and placed 2nd in some others. Eventually HOWMET decided there was no future for the car, since the Sports/GT class rules were changing to their disadvantage anyway, and R&D was costing them far more than they were bringing back.

The two prototype racers are both intact today, altho one of their engines has been replaced by MYSTERY ENGINE #9, above. They are occasionally raced in vintage events and still manage to throw dust all over the competition, as shown in the video below.

This is the on-board view from inside an original Ford GT-40 450hp 427 GT racer (which raced at LeMans in 1966), chasing the white HOWMET as hard as he can around the Spa-Francorchamps grand prix circuit in Belgium just two years ago. Remember, the Ford GT beat the Ferraris at LeMans in the '60s by out-speeding them on the Mulsanne straight, which means they were clocking just over 200mph back in 1965-6-7. The HOWMET waits until his tires are warm, even lets him pass for 1/2 minute, then walks away from the GT40 like a scalded cat.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_y-7vHEMhw

You'll see the GT-40 pick up the HOWMET TX @03:00, after a 190mph burst down the straightaway on lap#2. The HOWMET TX plays with him a minute, then tires of it and simply disappears. Bear in mind the GT-40 was not an easy car to drive and, altho this guy's actually in the fray and I'm sitting comfortably behind my keyboard, "he drives differently than I do".

Here's some more data on the HOWMET:

Geesh, Mike !!! Great work, AGAIN!!!

:? Hmmmm....

I've never seen a real one, so this is just a guess ~

could that be the secret Datsun AY12 Crossflow Hemi head A20 engine, for the 'factory racing' Datsun Cherry?

Yours is certainly a cross-flow hemi head, but I can't tell if it's a dohc or a pushrod engine..

Well, it's a cross-flow 4 cylinder hemispherical chamber head, with dual twin choke carbs and a bundle of snakes for exhaust. Can't actually determine if it's a DOHC or not, but there's enough room in there for it to be. I just don't see the cam drive mechanisms, so it maybe a pushrod engine. it's all Nissan, whatever it is.

I'm saying a Datsun Royalty LZ20B racing engine.
