WELL!!! I guess you could spend an entire lifetime and never see one of those in person. They were never available over here, of course, and cost the equivalent of about $9,000 USD back in the late 1970s/early '80s! (and that was just for the HEAD, ALONE!)

Here's some of the info I was able to gather quickly about this fantastic engine:

"about" 2.0L, 'about' 155hp - 560hp at "about" 8000rpm. Fuel injection, turbo or Naturally Aspirated versions available, single or double overhead cams available, 2 or 4 valves per cylinder available.

http://datsun1200.com/modules/mediawiki ... p?title=LZ

Some chatter on related forums about this incredible engine:

"The car featured the LZ20B engine. The LZ engine was back then the racing spec engine by Nissan and was based upon the L engine (many flavors) featuring a different head with a 16 valve twin cam. So the LZ20 was basically an overbored L20 engine (2082 cc instead of 1952 cc) with a special twin cam 16 valve head on it. The LZ20 engine was first used in a Nissan Violet A10 doing a safari rally and later on in a Violet KP710 SSS and featured in many formula race cars later on.

The LZ20B used in the Skyline KDR30 was improved a lot over the years and featured electronic fuel injection and turbo charging through a T05B turbo. It was able to output 570ps (563bhp) at 7600 rpm and delivered 539 nm at 6400 rpm. The competing Silvia Turbo S12 and Bluebird 910 did also have the same LZ20B engine but both were entirely different tuned: some sources say the Silvia was only capable of 500ps and it did that at 8000 rpm. For the Silvia it didn’t really matter because it was much more streamlined than the Skyline and Bluebird".

Frank, thought I would share some motor photos from this past season on your post, most will recognize. Basically I needed to get away from this terrible tragedy for awhile, like most of us who have a passion for special cars we can loose ourselves for awhile in our hobby. Most of the photos are from Lime Rock and some Concours events.

Thanks, Colin! This is actually Jim Arnett's Post, which has snowballed into a bigger monster than anyone expected!

I see two engines among your gallery which I don't recogniZe and want to know more about them. Do you have full photos of all these wonderful mills?

This makes you want to climb in there and sniff the nitro methane, doesn't it?

Not sure how I missed this last engine, but it's a 1940s Chrysler Spitfire flathead. They made straight 6s and straight 8s. Chrysler products back in those days included DeSoto, Dodge, Plymouth (with a little Mayflower ship as a logo), Chrysler, Imperial, Maxwell, Valiant and Jeep, so you might see these flathead engines in almost any of those marques.
Chrysler came out of WWII quite rich and was able to father an entire family of cars, some very innovative and beautiful.

OK, so here are two engines for the same car, one succeeding the other.

Let's see how many of our Baby Boomer members can decide which car these powered?

I'm not a baby boomer, but I'll guess. The engine bay looks very much like a Cobra, so I'll say it is the car Shelby used, the AC Bristol. I've never seen one in person though.

BINGO! Well done, sir!

The beautiful AC Ace roadster was the body which Carrol Shelby selected for his Cobra. But they were raced quite successfully a full decade before that happened.

The bottom engine was the original 2.0L OHC Weller unit, which pushed the car to almost 100mph. At the top is the 2.0L German BMW designed "Bristol" engine (stolen from Germany after WWII), which boosted horsepower to 135 (later 173hp) and speed and made the car really competitive (it actually catapulted it into a higher racing class). This "AC Bristol" was the car which Shelby raced in the 1950s. He loved the car's handling characteristics, but felt it needed "a little more power". Ten years later he started dropping Ford V8s into the car and the rest is history.
