did someone put something in the water?? ebaymotors has five people that have lost their minds!! zcars are suppose to be affordable cars that we enjoy working on and driving and sharing our stories about. when i see prices like $59,000, $69,000, $47,900,$25,000,and $27,595 i see red. just because you paid someone to build a car for you, you can't pass the bill onto the next guy. where did you put the money? this opens the flood gates for every tom dick and harry to put an crazy price on their ride and price the regular guy out of this hobby. please don't entertain these people by putting a bid on these cars. some years ago a friend bought a 1970 chevelle ss for $100,000 and now the car is worth $50,000. the same friend bought a 1970 el camino ss for $10,000 and wants $25,000 for it now. i think everyone has lost their minds and barret- jackson has helped them.i'll have to tell my daughter she can't go to college so i can buy a $69,000 zcar, because i always wanted one!!!!! thanks for listening to my rant, i'll be quiet now.

Thats true, the prices have boomed to the atmosphere. Year and a half ago when i purchased my Z, it was different. I bought FRESHLY PAINTED RUST FREE 72 with car full of spare parts (new carbs etc) for 1400$ Now in ebay they sell rust buckets with double price. Just crazy.

Great Mikes/minds think alike! I couldn't agree more. Just because you dumped 80k into your car doesn't make it worth more than 80k. I had an 82 Firebird T/A and picked it up for 350 bucks. She was in great shape just was in a minor fender bender and interior needed to be redone. I ended up dumping over $2000 into her. Did I get 2500 for her when I sold her? Nope 700 bucks! She wasn't fully back together when I sold but really thought I'd get more based on the fact it was an 82 the first year of the new body style and very popular in the knight rider world. So Michael you are right. I bought my current Z over a year ago for 500 bucks and I've had such a great time with it. It's sad to think without clubs like ours it might be tough for that young kid to get into the Z world.

And they are not selling. I really think they are using ebay as a free venue to show off their cars.

Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it......

Exactly John. If someone is willing to pay 70k for 40k car he must have that extra money to throw away.

Another thing to think about is that the 240Z is in fact a rare car! Not too many of them still around and MANY less than that are "fine" examples. Supply and demand dictates value.

As an educated guess (yes, I actually surveyed Z owners on another website), out of about 155,000 240Zs produced from 1969-73, I would estimate that there about 10-15% still in "on the road" condition. Using that number, that would give you about 20,000 240Zs still out there. Out of that 20k, MAYBE 1000 of them could be considered #1 or #2 condition cars. Looking at series one cars only, that number would be even less.

So while these people looking for $50k PLUS for their extremely nice 240Zs may be reaching for the stars, when you think about it, they may not be too far off. But in my opinion, the only 240Zs that will approach that kind of money in this day and age would be pristine, bone stock early VIN cars.

My 2 CentZ!

:D

Mike,

Quit yer whining and open your wallet. We need you back in the club with a Z car! A nice $50,000 example would work just fine and raise the average value of the rest of our cars.

:D But I do of course agree with you!

hey john, i think your grasping at straws here. those cars on ebay are all modded cars that the owners may or maynot have alot of money in. don't let a few #1 cars dictate what the market will bear.there is no zcar out there that is worth that kind of money, rare or not. there are plenty other zcars from late '69 to '78 that will fit the excitement factor.every year the factory made improvements, except hitachi carbs, that makes all these cars fun and lovable. if that were the case a edsel should be $100,000 or a saab sonnet should be $75,000 or how bout a amc pacer, now that's a real crowd pleaser at, oh lets' say a cool $150,000!! you can't let a few people dictate what a car is worth, as barret-jackson is doing. people are applauding as the price goes up, that is the seller, not the buyer, and all of a sudden that is the new price for that type of car.people, put your foot down, stop paying these prices, and the prices will come down just as the real estate prices have. the zcar was made to be affordable for the regular guy, lets' keep it that way!!!!

Not to be blatantly argumentative, but so were the Ford Model T and the old Mustang. Now they're old, rare, and there are fewer examples of those cars in good condition. Thus the price inflates. The Nissan S30 WAS meant for the average Joe back in the day, but times have changed. Now its not so much. With less and less of them on the road, I'd be dumbfounded if the price DIDN'T rise. Even BAD cars that have been thinned down by the attrition of time are worth a decent chunk of change. Vehicles like the Z which have endearing qualities should be worth more.

For modified cars, its worth whatever someone is willing to pay.

The regular guy car of today is a newer Focus or VW Golf.

Phrog said it well.

The Z WAS the best bang for a relatively cheap buck back in the day, but the 240Z is now 40 years old! Prime examples of STOCK versions will command bigger prices as time marches on simply due to lack of supply. The S30 was a huge hit back in the day, but the day has past. Today it is not only a historic car, but one with small numbers of nice examples left in existence. The 240Z is a modern classic, certainly not to be compared with a AMC or any of the other mass produced hunks of plain junk that were produced in huge quantity. Age alone does not equate value.

Today you can buy a 370Z for $30k, NOT a lot of money relatively speaking. Again the Z is one of the best bangs for the buck out there. And the "Average Joe" CAN afford a $30k car if he really wanted to.

So if you have a nice 240Z, hang on to it, preserve it and be thankful the value is rising. Or just beat it to death, drive it into the ground and make mine worth even more.

Uh, um, er, 41-1/2 years now, John! But who's counting? (Beside me)

I certainly do like and agree with your last comment, however!

P.S., Got out my daily vote for your 41-year-old "youngster."
