Tommy S sends this warning to NEVER talk on your cellphone while it is charging!

* * * * * * *

A few days ago, a person was recharging his mobile phone at home.
Just at that time a call came in and he answered it with the charging
Instrument still connected to the outlet.

After a few seconds electricity flowed into the cell phone unrestrained
and the young man was thrown to the floor with a heavy thud. As you can see, (graphic photo deleted) the phone actually exploded.
His parents rushed to the room only to find him unconscious, with a weak heartbeat and burnt fingers. (graphic photo deleted).

He was rushed to the nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Cell phones are a very useful modern invention. However, we must be aware that it can also be an instrument of death.

Never use the cell phone while it is hooked to the electrical outlet! If you are charging the cell phone and a call comes in, unplug it from the charger and outlet.

FORWARD THIS TO THE PEOPLE THAT MATTER IN YOUR LIFE!!!!
Whether or not they have a cell phone. They can also inform others who do......

(Surgical Services, Miami Hospital)

Thanks Tom!

Frank

The hazards of recharging batteries are well known in the radio control airplane hobby, where electric powered planes have become extremely popular since the advent of lithium-polymer (li-po) batteries. It is standard practice to remove the batteries from planes while recharging, and to place them in a flame-proof container while recharging. They are a fire hazard. However, amongst this group, there is frequent damage to the batteries, lots of people cob together their own packs, and the batteries are much larger, more powerful, and frequently and rapidly cycled. A shorted battery will overheat and can cause fire even when off the charger, as well. I suggest that, if you are nervous about these things, you should make sure that ALL rechargeable devices you own are placed somewhere safe (E.G. a granite countertop, a metal tray, etc etc) while you are charging them. I recharge my cellphone and my laptop on my kitchen counters, and I would NEVER leave my laptop to recharge on my wooden desk, covered with papers. Many of the remote-control airfields I have seen provide large flower pots filled with sand as charging stations for batteries.
However, if you read the snopes article, this killed-child incident is yet another urban myth...Frank is kind of a sucker for internet-propogated urban myths! Please note that you are far more likely to drown in a spackle bucket than to be killed or gravely injured by a cell phone battery. The real hazards of cell phones continue to be the distractions they create for people who should be paying attention to where they are driving or walking.
