For those of you old enough to remember Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band of the 1960s, he died today.

Cap'n B taught me to love the flattop guitar, the Dobro and electric blues. He was a little whacked-out, but it was a different time ~ You had to be there.

Farewell, Captain my Captain. We'll boogie on for ya.

Never heard of him before.
Probably because I spent most of the '60's in Viet Nam and Korea......

I'm with you, Rick. Never heard of him. You and I have been around for a long time. USArmy 61-64. A little early for Nam.

Frank T: you mentioned "Dobro"...was he country? Heard of Seldom Scene?

Heck yeah, I know Seldom Scene. They played (FREE) for us troops in Hawaii in the mid '70s, accompanied by two of the original DOpyera BROthers (inventors of the Dobro), but I don't know which two they were.

SS covers a lot of the very best early Bluegrass songs. They've changed a few performers over the years, and I thought the first players were best, but today's band is still excellent. They can still do a great job on Little Jimmy Dickens' songs. They've been around for abt 40 years, I'd guess.

A Bluegrass friend of mine opened for them when they played in Mass last year. They're still picking!

Glad you know of them!

Captain Beefheart was one of the first 'artists' (if you'll allow that) to use a Dobro regularly in his band. He began with two flat-top guitars, and the first time he used a Dobro, he was hooked.
(HAHA! Just one more thing for him to be addicted to! )

For those of y'all who don't know what we're talking about, a Dobro looks like an accoustic guitar with a hubcap stuck on it. It has a sound like nothing else on the planet. It's usually tuned in a Slack Key, or open G or D, and played with a slide.

Here's an example of some downhome blues on a Dobro:

Frank T,

That was a great example of a "bluesy" style on a dobro. I had the fortune of being stationed at Ft Gordon, GA with Mike Auldridge. He never carried a dobro while in the service. He played a mean flat top and 5 string as well.
Years ago Sacred Heart U had a bluegrass series, 3 shows per season for $10/show. Saw all the big groups and duos. Original Selsom Scene with John Starling at least twice.
Play the link below, Maiden's Prayer.
Auldridge and Jerry Douglas are miles apart. Douglas plays hard, Mike Auldridge plays with a lot of finesse.

Enjoy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xltyqGmk ... 3&index=23

Merry Christmas to all. Slainte!
Alan
