I was stationed on Oahu Hawaii more than 30 years after the WWII air raid. Evidence of the brief battle was still visible. I was stationed in the hangar which is shown 'destroyed' in the photographs.

Click on any photo to enlarge it.

Remember Pearl Harbor.

Frank, my father who passed away a few months aga was 18 and stationed in pearl harbor when it was attacked. His ship was destroyed and he was assigned to helping with cleanup of the carnage. After he served his time and was discharged he never spoke of it again ever. I only found out from an aunt about several years ago.All my dad said was he was in the navy.My aunt swore me to never mention it to my dad. She said the only time he ever talked to her about it was when he first came back. She said that he was so disturbed by what he experienced in the clean up that he begged her to never mention it again. She only told me because she was ill and felt someone should have the knowledge to pass down to his grandchildren.I told all of his grandchildren what a Hero their Grandpa was.

Sure Bill ~ can you picture what "clean up" entailed? We lost 2400 men in that raid, and almost all of them died on their ships. Your Dad had to spend months pulling them out. One day of that would change a man, but where do you find the courage to keep going back to it day after day after day?

War SHOULDN'T be talked about at home. It's too hideous. It's simply not something a man should want his family to know about. It would shame me to tell my family what I saw Man doing in my war. I would be afraid just that knowledge might change them forever. I think remaining silent is a way of protecting the ones you love.
