We've heard about the incredible new Lexus all-carbon fiber 9,000rpm V-10 supercar. Its engine weighs less than a V6 but puts out 550hp. It took more than 10 years to plan and build and is heralded as the next world's champion supercar. It revs from idle to redline in less than 1/2 second. A real monster car.

But look what happens when Road & Track pits it against the $80,000 Nissan GT-R for a 1/4 mile drag race!

The Lexus turns in a very respectable 11.8 seconds and 123.7 mph.
The GT-R makes it in a very close 11.9 seconds and 120.1 mph.

That means you're paying $320,000 for that 1/10th of a second, and 3.7mph difference.

For that little difference, I'll take the GT-R. I'm sure I could find SOMETHING to do with the $320,000 I would save.

GO NISSAN!

And neither one of them would put the same smile on my face as my 240Z.

But in 1976 I had a 1970 Dodge Challenger r/t with a 1965 chrysler 413 wedge that had about $10,000 in the motor ( parts ,machine work and labor). I had about $15,000 total in the car (purchase price included) and I turned a 10.0 second 1/4 mile at 141 mph. So in a 1/4 mile drag race old mopar iron will out do $80,000 and $400,000 hands down. To be honest I'm not sure any motor will beat old mopar iron in a drag race ever. However they don't corner very well.

Took you awhile to figure out the value of a Z Car, eh Bill?
At $3526 a pop, you could have had 4.231422 new 240Zs for that price!

Or more realistically, 4 new Zs each with $224 worth of accessories
(also a pretty realistic figure at that time).

Or how about this: if you had bought a Hemi Charger or Challenger and
kept it pretty nice to this day, you could now sell it and buy half of Jim
Frederick's collection of Z Cars.

I'm funnin' with ya. In 1951 when the first Hemi came out, I think it was
a 274, the only competition at the time was the 303 Olds. As it grew to
331, 354, 392, and 426, it became harder and harder to beat. Both at
the strip and in Nascar. You notice what engine all the top fuel dragsters
and funny cars used. You notice which car got banned from Nascar, not
because Petty was driving it (which helped a lot), but because until it
was banned, it virtually eliminated the competition (which included 427
Fords and Chevys driven by some hall of fame drivers).

FWIW,.................Rick (Kathy wasn't in the mix at the time)

I'm the guy who inspired the Lottery Slogan:
"You can't win if you don't play!"
What they don't say is, you can't lose, either.
I was the sap that years ago, occasionally sweetened the kitty for everyone else.

Actually, more recently, I think 1998, somebody in the office was getting
a group participation together because the pot was much higher than
usual. Having say 50 chances instead of 1, we did win something that
week which came out to about 2 bucks apiece. So what did we do?
"Reinvested it" in the following week's lottery and lost it all back again.

Story of my gambling life.
That's why I don't do it any more.
I should have listened to my Grandmother: "Only bet on a sure thing."
