HEY! Believe it or not, we have a TORNADO warning right now (5:30PM Thurs/16Sep) for our Z brothers and sisters around Staten Island, Brooklyn and NYC at this moment. The storm is headed for CT quickly.

Tune in to your local weather channel and get those dagummed Zs under cover!

Frank

Go to "underground weather" type in your zip code and animate the radar map for very accurate weather. I don't have to rely on the weathermans accuracy , I can see it for myself. Here I can see exactly where the storms are coming from and going and can see severity and predict within 3-5 minutes of when they will hit a certain area. It is usually within 5-8 minutes of real time. It is a great site , and free. Give it a try.
Oh and Frank I got 90 degrees, clear skies and a 5 mph breeze here!

So did we Bill, 21 years ago (Jul89) when a super cell spouted 6 funnels in this dinky little state and clobbered us. That day was 92* and perfect until the sky turned iridescent green and black.

These things can't be taken lightly. Moving here from NC (where they're pretty frequent), I figured I was done with them.

Wrong.

It was super windy crossing the Old Saybrook bridge on 95 Thursday night after class. That explains it.

Well...I drove straight through this...err actually, I was stopped at the time...everyone had to. I drove through the 'Macroburst' in Forest Hills, Queens, on my way home from work. I've driven in some serious downpours, but nothing like this. My little Focus SVT was literally rocking and rolling. Thankfully, I was sitting at a stop light, with no trees immediately around me. It was 3 minutes of absolute mayhem...

Driving through that area since is like a warzone...many many 100-year old trees uprooted and cars crushed...

Glad you didn't get smushed. I haven't heard the official report from the National Weather Service yet, but witnesses all feel it was a tornado. One guy described a big tree being pulled up into the air about 90 feet, spinning around like a windmill. He says two trashcans got pulled up into the air with the tree, and the spinning tree hit one of them like a baseball bat, sending it about 80 yards into another neighborhood.

Focuses weigh less than trees.

Yes...I was very fortunate. The scoop is:

1. Confirmed Tornado in Park Slope, Brooklyn (my old hood)
2. Confirmed Tornado in Flushing, Queens
3. Confirmed Macroburst in Forest Hills, Queens...this is the one I had a close encounter with

Yikes!

Microbursts and macrobursts are intense concentrations of air being blasted either upwards or downwards in a small area. Aircraft are especially susceptible to them while the plane is near the ground. Tornados have both. The center of the funnel pulls upward, of course, but the periphery of the funnel is surrounded by intense downward winds, as well.

HA! I just went looking for a professional definition for you, and they use this very event as an example!
