Well the last one I needed was Automatic transmissions, and I hate them, and not the greatest with em either. Take one out, put one in, good enough. Well I passed it, and now I'm a Master again. (recertified Master Mechanic) :D Now I can breath for another 10 years. Maybe they will do away with those things by then.

No, internal combustion cars!

CONGRATULATIONS, Paul! When I was a teenager there were still quite a few Master mechs around, but when cars began getting computeriZed, the numbers dwindled.

Anyone who struggles thru the ASE or SAE courses to become a Master Mechanic in America today, has a wide horiZon of training and experience behind him.

Shop safety, combustion theory, ElectroMechanical theory, fluid dynamics, Pneumatics, physics, math, geometry (), chemistry, thermal dynamics, computer theory, welding and metalurgy all play roles in today's cars. A Master Mechanic needn't be a Wizzard at each of these, but he must have a working knowledge of most of it, and a 6th sense of how they work together (or against each other) in real life.

THEN, there's the TOOLS you have to buy, and all the diagnostic machinery you need, to keep up with the ever-more-complicated automotive onboard computer systems.

When I was very young, windshield wipers were driven by manifold vacuum. The generation before me drove them by hand. Today they're driven by computers, which sense the presence of raindrops on the windshield and turn themselves on and off as needed. It's a challenge being a mechanic for such fast-paced evolution, even during one man's lifetime.

Congratulations again, Paul. I took four years of AutoMech and Physics in high school, so I recogniZe your rating to be a very significant accomplishment, and I'm proud to be in the same Club as a Master Mech.

Thanks. :D Yea, it's a never ending battle. I'm no wiz at it all, especially the electronics, but if it's mechanical I can fix it. I prefere the old stuff anyways. Just about all my vehicles can have a Antique plates on them. But the technology today blows me away and is pretty neat, as long as it's working. (ever see a brand new BMW stranded on the side of the road.) Now I do have life long schooling through U.T.I. so anytime I want to go back and renew my education, I can go about an hour away to Norwood Mass. now. I just pay for the books. :D It's a constant learning process. To what Phil said, each test carries a 10 year span. So some I have to renew sooner than others. Which is ok, because to take 8 test all at once can be a draining mind thing and prone to fail. :?
