Teenage heartthrob singer Mary Wiess from the Shangri-Las as died of COPD.
In 1963/64 the Shangi-Las (two sets of twin sisters, two blondes and two brunettes) smashed-landed in the Top Ten with two songs; "Remember"(Walkin' in the sand) and "Leader of the Pack". The two sets of twins met in school in Queens NY and were so young, they could not legally sign a contract. Mary's blonde sister became mysteriously pregnant and was instantly dropped by the record company. Thus, the Shangi-Las became a trio. In spite of the millions of dollars they earned with the #1 and #5 records in 1964, their greedy producers swindled them out of the money and they never got much themselves.

But an even greater loss (for me personally, anyway), is that Melanie Safka has died in TN. Known simply as Melanie, she rocked the charts in the late 1960s and thru the '70s. She stepped onto the stage as an unknown at Woodstock, Aug'69, and walked off the stage a legend.
I personally credit Melanie for having got me thru some really rough times in Vietnam, and thru my divorce which followed. It was on my bucket list to find her and hug her just once, and thank her for every song she ever sang.

She was a versatile singer, wrote all her own material, and covered every emotion in the human heart. She made at least a dozen albums; I know I have that many of them myself.

If any of you are too young to remember Melanie, I urge you to familiarize yrslf with her songs. She used her little-girl voice to roar like a lion about things which mattered to her generation. She's gone now, but please don't let Melanie's music die.

It's hard to watch the people you've admired and cared for all your life die before you do.
