Child actor of the 1940s '50s and '60s Dwayne Hickman died 09Jan22. Born, raised and died in LA, Hickman became an idol of the baby boomer TV set as "Dobie [DOUGH-bee) Gillis", the high school kid who never met a girl he didn't love, from 1959-1963.

One of those girls was Tuesday (Susan Ker) Weld, who was a regular on the show. Dobie had a new heart-throb every episode, as he tried to dodge Zelda K. Gilroy (Sheila Kuehl), the plain-Jane tomboy who decided he should be hers. I always suspected "Lucy" in Charley Brown was the inspiration for Zelda.

Dobie's Good Buddy was Maynard G. Krebs (Bob Denver), one of the last remaining Beatniks (who were losing ground to the upcoming Hippies). Maynard was alergic to work (WORK!!) and never changed his clothes throughout the entire series. Dobie's storekeeper dad proudly reminded everyone he was a veteran of WWII ("the big one"), (*WITH* the Good Conduct Medal).

When he became too old to be a believable high school Senior, Dwayne Hickman went on to become an important behind-the-scenes executive in the TV business, and he helped promote the careers of his old TV casts. His "Good Buddy" Maynard (Bob Denver) died in 2005 at age 70; Dwayne Hickman lived to be 87.

Like, goodbye, Good Buddy.

Dobie and Maynard G. were regulars in the "way back". Always fun to watch. Back then TV comedy was clever and a bit silly but never offensive. I guess that's why I still watch re-runs of Gunsmoke and Perry Mason. Never cared for Bonanza. Too much use of sound stages and not enough in the big outdoors.

In the immortal words of Bob dylan..."The times, they are a changin". Not much left for "Old Five and Dimers" (Emmylou Harris) like so many of us.

And that's the news from Lake Wobegon, "where all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average."

Alan
