Danny's home, safely watching the games this weekend. I spoke with him on Saturday and again today. The weather out there has been pretty heavy lately. He's not really hibernating, just laying low.

He hates Dallas as much as I do, and has loved the Vikes since he was a kid. (Hard to picture somebody that big as a kid!).

Remember ~ he has a brand-new Dream Garage to play with now, so I suspect we'll hear from him when he gets tired of playing in it.

I hardly know what to say.

The Astros never give me much to cheer for, and now that all the
"Killer B's" have retired, even less so.
The Rangers always have good hitting but lose by 12-11, 15-10,
and scores like that because of their lack of pitching.

Army loses to Navy almost every year.
Texas lost the National title game to Alabama.

The Houston Texans came up pretty well this year but fell short.
The Cowboys got their butts kicked, or I should say they kicked
their own butts, or shot themselves in the foot, with sloppy play.
So I guess the next closest team is New Orleans. I'm not a Saints
fan, but Drew Brees is a fine Christian gentleman and I would like
to see him win a Super Bowl during his career.

Maybe the Dallas Stars can make the Stanley Cup playoffs this year,
but I have more confidence in the Red Wings or Bruins.

Fortunately I'm not a bettor, or I would have had to sell the Zs by now.
If you want to place a bet, ask me who I'm rooting for and then bet
on the other team if you want to make some nice tax free income!

 Hahaha! You're singing to the Choir, Rick! I've lost more money on the Green Bay Packers than anyone in the history of the NFL!

And Drew Brees can win his Superbowl ~ but just not this year, please.

Did I ever tell you I nearly got arrested for disturbing the peace the last time the Pack won the Superbowl? I was ecstatic, after watching Reggie White (the "Minister of Defense") run around Lambeau Field, holding the Vince Lombardi trophy over his head for the fans to see. I ran across the backyard to my buddy's house and yelled up into his bedroom window that we were the champions and reminded him how much money he would have owed me if we had made that bet. I guess I was a bit loud and didn't realiZe the hour, because some sleeping neighbor called the cops. FORTUNATELY both the responding officers were Packer Backers and I had not a trace of alcohol about me. I got sent home but I grinned all the way.

I guess I should have done it with a phonecall rather than in person!

And you didn't mention the Houston Oilers. My ex girlfriend used to work in their corporate building and I visited her daily. I once shared an elevator with "Refrigerator" Perry, and wondered how any team with something that large could ever lose a game.

Just so you know,Drew Brees played his high school ball in Westlake,a small but affluent principality w/in the Austin Tx city limits.

And Frank,I was also there at the 'Dome for the Bum Phillps 'Love Ya Blue' era in the early eighties....wonder if we might have been at some of the same games?

Al

(Oh yeah, shook hands w/ Ken Stabler one nite @ Gilley's in Pasadena Tx)

Frank, I used to like the Oilers too, but they never did too well. Like
the Astros, they had one big year. But then in a playoff game when
they were beating Buffalo 30something to 3, Frank Reich engineered
what I think is one of the best comebacks I ever saw. The Oilers
were one of what, six teams never to make the Super Bowl? And
then to top it all off they ran off to TN on me...............

Al, if I knew about Drew's home town I must have forgotten, which
is shameful since that is only about 60 miles away from Belton.....
I have been told I look like Ken Stabler, so maybe that was me you
met. Also like Kenny Rogers (the singer, not the Detroit (formerly
Rangers) pitcher.........

Cam, I was a big Red Wings fan for 20 or 30 years before there even
were the Dallas Stars. Going back to when the whole team were
budding Hall of Famers (Howe, Lindsay, Abel, Sawchuk, Arbour, Kelly,
Hall, DelVecchio, Stasiuk, probably more..............) And Z Cars
weren't anywhere in anyone's thought processes.............

I tried to get into Gilley's one night while I was in Houston, but I had a Z and not a pickup truck, so they wouldn't let me in the parkinglot.....

I stayed in the motel directly across the street from the AstroDome while they were building it. I got to walk inside each day, and marveled at how huge I thought it was. All I could think was, "big empty building....heavy Texas weather....this place will never last". Years later, it's still there.

By the way, it took me 22hrs to drive from New Orleans into Houston. It was the very worst fog I have ever seen in my lifetime. I tucked my little 240Z up to the tailgate of an 18 wheeler and talked to the driver (remember CBs?) for the whole trip ~ at 6mph. Visibility was virtually ZERO for much of the trip, but I couldn't see anyplace to pull off the road, and I was afraid somebody would slam me from behind if I did (I passed many such scenarios along the way).

My little Z was on empty by the time I reached Houston the next morning. I recall passing hundreds of huge fuel storage tanks, all full of gasoline no doubt, but couldn't find an actual gas station for miles.

Ten-four on the fog, good buddy! And let me tell you about the rain.
I've traveled from MS to TX on I-10 when I ran into a literal WALL of
descending water at about 70 MPH in the vicinity of Baton Rouge. I
don't think I've ever seen rain that heavy except in FL, between Or-
lando and Melbourne, right Carl and Jimbo? It happens the same way
in Central TX, but not as bad. It ALWAYS happens about 2:00 or
3:00 PM, and within an hour the sun is out like nothing happened.

You see dark clouds ahead, and you get ready for the deluge sure to
come. You hit it and you're totally blinded. If you had a hood orna-
ment you couldn't see it. You want to slam on the brakes, but you're
afraid the guy behind you won't. At the same time you're afraid that if
you keep going, the guy ahead of you has slammed on his brakes but
you couldn't see his lights for the volume of water. You want to pull
over but don't want to risk sideswiping an Armco barrier or going into
a flooded barditch. So basically all that is left to do is go straight,
decelerate gently, pray that the road doesn't curve and that you are
alone in that sector, and reach for the toilet paper!!!!

Well, both my beloved Packers AND my inspiring Vikings have been eliminated for the 2010 SuperBowl. And Brett Favre's final play of this season (and possibly of his career) was an interception, JUST LIKE two years ago when he played with Green Bay.

I always suspected he changed his mind about retiring because he didn't want to end his career with a season-ending interception. Maybe this will keep him from retiring again this year?

I have to say, all four of the teams who played in this year's Conference championships certainly earned their places there. The match-up btwn Minnesota and New Orleans was so even, it wasn't funny. Both teams got good calls and bad calls from the zebras, so I can't complain much about that. And altho Minnesota's statistics nearly doubled those of New Orleans, the Saints' Defense was absolutely awesome this year. They showed the great Vikings Offense that you can't win a ballgame by repeatedly giving the football to the other guys.

I called Danny Linquist several times during the game, and we both confessed we were sitting on the edge of our seats. In the 4th quarter we also predicted this game would be decided off someone's right toe ~ and that's exactly how it happened.

So the Colts and the Saints are off to Miami to fight each other in the Super Bowl. My football season is essentially over :( . I will certainly watch the S.B., and probably hope for the Colts to win (I remember Johnny Unitas), but I can't promise much enthusiasm about the game regardless who wins.

One possible silver lining might emerge from this dark cloud ~ there could be a chance that Green Bay could coax Brett Favre back into the Pack for his final year, and I would get to see my football hero play for my football team ~ where he belongs ~ once more.

Frank, couldn't have said it better myself. Both me and my dad were on the edge of our seats the entire game. I'm pretty sure I lost my voice and I think I damaged a good number of cabinet doors with all the ridiculous fumbles. Brett Favre made the Vikings who they are and yet couldn't keep it together himself. I would have loved to see the Vikings in Miami, but it is what it is. However, I feel that it would be nice to see him play another year with the Vikings, this time going all the way.

Yeah, I have to agree he would have a better season if he stayed with the Vikings, but selfishly, I would rather watch him play another year for the Pack.

It's just me.

He didn't do BADLY this year (until tonight!). But I really shouldn't criticiZe anybody who plays that game professionally, whether they win or lose. Getting beaten-up for a living at age 25 hurts, but consider doing it at age 40!

I did martial arts almost every day for more than 12 years, and I'm really paying for it today. I can only imagine how badly Brett is gonna hurt in another 10 or 20 years! Watching some of the hits he took tonight made me cringe.

So, did you bet against your Dad?

You guys are too hyper, I lazed back on the couch with my feet on the
coffee table (good thing Kathy was upstairs) (it was okay, I had my
shoes off) and munched pretzels the whole time.

Okay, I lied, I did lean forward eight or ten times, but most of those were
to pet Honey (our little yellow Lab). She enjoyed the game as much as I
did-- also the pretzels! She ate the ones I dropped (some intentionally).
