What's the best product to remove paint and rust? No sandblasting options, please. Must be available on the market still today. I've got gloves and masks, so give me the nastiest of nasty stuff...please. I need to get these parts cleaned and painted! Thanks.

Here's an interesting report on one of my favorite nasties, Naval Jelly: http://www.selah.k12.wa.us/soar/sciproj ... olasa.html I've used N/J on my Z wheels since the 1970s. It's much quieter than a jackhammer. It did wonders for the BACKSIDES of my 5-slot mags, leaving them as spotless as the fronts. I sometimes had trouble STOPPING n/j when the dirt/Fe2o3 was gone, and I actually left a few indelible streaks in the clean metal of two of my wheels. Happily, those were on the backside where they didn't show, but be aware it can happen if you don't wash it off promptly. Always have a hose charged and ready to come to the instant rescue in case the N/J wants to eat more than you intended it to. Flooding with water is the only way to stop N/J from eating things (including you). Also, don't breathe this stuff or rub your eyes after using it. Basically jellied H3o4p phosphoric acid, Naval Jelly should be considered Methyl-Ethyl-Badstuff in a plastic bottle. It will turn your skin orange and turn your eyes blind and eat holes thru your bluejeans if you splash it on you. A narrow paintbrush and a stiff wire scrub brush should come free with each bottle of this sold, but alas, the world is not yet perfect, so they don't. Buy your own. Available in Lowes and maybe Home Depot. The Rusty Bug in Hamden (old VW beetle revivers) use this stuff by the boatload. http://ecologicarchitecture.com/SoloHobbit/rust/ http://www.amazon.com/Loctite-Naval-Dis ... B000C016OC Some people have sung the praises of something called EcoTech. It does a great job but requires you to immerse the rusty part in a barrel of it. It doesn't cling like N/J so you can't 'paint it on', but it reportedly does an excellent job removing rust. It will NOT remove paint. It is basically really strong citrus-based and is easy to clean up and eco-friendly even if you dump it in your yard. More expensive than n/j and slower; I'll stick with the naval jelly overall. Home Depot, Lowes and Ace Hardware all have paint and varnish removers that are sold in environmentally safe formulas and others like BIX Stripper that can be washed off with water. It's still flammable, poisonous and requires good ventilation but works great. I've used this semi-paste on all kinds of finishes with good success. A second application may be required and I've even covered some treated parts with plastic wrap (keeps it from drying too quickly) and left it covered overnight, with good results. RUST...? Do rust converting (YES converting). It "stops rust on contact". Like magic... I would recommend a can of VHT Rust Convertor.Worked great on boat trailer and trailer hitches. If you have difficulty locating it try an auto paint supplier. Good luck. Howard |

Thanks guys. I am looking to take some rust off of my rear shock mounts before repainting and re installing them. I'll swing by the stores an see what's out there.  Naval jelly sounds promising!

You can get phosphoric acid in a higher concentration by the gallon sold as prep and etch at hardware stores (~$15 a gallon). I use a wire wheel on an angle grinder for getting down to bare metal and phosphoric acid in a spray bottle to convert all the leftover rust. |

Die-hard professional racers used to dip their body panels in it to make them thinner/lighter. That was especially useful in NASCAR and dragracing, because they received their cars directly from the factory and thinning the panels was one of the few things they could legally get away with. |

So this probably won't help you guys with large parts, but for small parts and rust removal I have been using EvapoRust with great success. I am stripping all the hardware to have it replated, and soaking it in this stuff works WONDERS for things like hose clamps, and odd brackets and the like. Here is a picture of my carb before, and after soaking the individual parts in this stuff for a few days. The only thing i did was use a small toothbrush to agitate the rust off after, and if needed resoaked it once further down rust was exposed.  Note the choke cable double clamp as a good example. I did this on some calipers and brake dust shields and it was awesome. Just don't use stainless steel as your sacrificial electrode... just don't, for environmental reasons! This is for rust only. To remove paint you'd have to use aircraft remover (by Rustoleum, good stuff). |
