Has anyone had any luck locating a good chrome plating company in the area? :?:

I am looking at getting my original 240Z bumpers re-chromed and have heard some horror stories from others that have gone through this process.

I would prefer using a shop that I can deliver the parts to in person, rather than reducing the risk of damage or loss due to shipping.

The alternative to this would be to possibly purchase new replacement bumpers (Euro style from Motorsport) at around $350 each.

Any input is welcome. :D

I've not used them, but I heard they were the largest (quickest) local company available:

http://www.newenglandchrome.com/consumer.shtml

(As if your car needed anything rechromed, John. It's already perfect as it is).

I actually wanted Ulbrich specialty metals to chrome a bunch of parts for me, but could never get thru on their telephone. Either they're extremely busy all day every day, or they only have one phone line and the operator talks to her boyfriend on it all day. :?

Thanks Frank. I have New England Chrome my list. Just wondering if anyone has used them before.

Thanks for the compliment on the bumpers, but they are getting a bid dull, especially the center portion of the front bumper. You can really see the difference when you look at the nice chrome under the rubber strips which I just removed. BTW, I had quite a chore getting the rusted nut loose which holds the right bumper guard on. I had to use a dremmel to cut the nut off as it rounded on me during the removal process, and yes, I used plenty of WD40.

The front bumper has very little rust as I had taken the precaution of painting the inside of the bumpers with Rustoleum a lloonnnnggg time ago. The bumper guards are fine. I had ordered all new bumper rubber strips from Motorsport a couple of years ago, so I guess the next step is to bring the bare front bumper to NEC and see what they say. If NEC works out OK I will bring them the left rear corner (exhaust side) bumper. This is the only dull portion on the rear bumper as I had all the rest replaced about 25 years ago after someone rear ended me on the parkway.

Wish me luck.

My front bumper had been cheaply replated before I found and bought my car back in 2008. The center of it began to peel soon after I got it home. I took it to a normal body shop and paid them to strip the center section (btwn the uprights) and paint it flat-black with a good paint. I left the ends chromed. That left me with a black grille behind a black bumper, which looked dorky. I pulled the grille, stripped it and painted it silver to contrast with the black center bumper. Looks better (to me) now.

I'm sure Datsun would disapprove.

Quick update - After many calls to various plating shops and realizing there are very few local shops that do this type of work anymore. The bumper now resides at New England Chrome in East Hartford.

$475 - 8 weeks.

We shall see.

About 2-3yrs ago I heard that due to the financial strain placed on small rechroming shops by the EPA/DEP, most had stopped doing that work. All chrome shops were then forwarding their customers' material to one or the other of two major rechroming centers; one handled the east and the other handled the west. I once knew where they were but have since forgotten.
That could explain the two-month turn-around.

No I don't own it or have any stake.
They supply parts for the aerospace industry for which I work.
I do agree the phone system isn't the best.

Any update on this? Was the $475 for both bumpers? Wondering how they turned out and how the experience was.

Thanks

Years ago I used to be able to have my engine steam-cleaned at any gas station for $15.
That's gone, shut down by the EPA/DEP.

Up until last year I used to be able to have my wheels and car parts sand-blasted by any car shop or headstone maker for a reasonable price.
That's gone this year, also shut down by the EPA/DEP. :x

Up until 4-5 yrs ago I could have my automotive parts chromed at any of several car or motorcycle custom shops.
That's gone now, also shut down by the EPA/DEP.

I think, if you're a gearhead, the EPA/DEP are not your friend.

I'm looking at todays look-alike "cars" all made of plastic, and no chrome, and wondering how much the EPA/DEP might have had to do with that?

I used to work in Teaneck N.J., which is right across the GW bridge. On my lunch hour, I would take motorcycle parts to Mara Polishing and Plating Company in Jersey City. They did very good work but New England Chrome sounds closer.
