Post subject:  240z Blacked-out exterior trim opinions?

Hello,

I have always thought my orange 240z would look great with satin black wheels and the exterior trim painted satin black too. I was originally going to buy my wheels (Rota RB-R 16x8) in satin black, but was a little worried I wouldn't like it so I bought my rims in hyper black with a polished lip. I liked the pictures I saw of that finish, but couldn't find any good pictures with it all blacked out. I figured I would like the way the hyper black looked for now and if I ever decided to change I could always just paint it later.

I have been playing around with an open source photo editor called Gimp that's a lot like Photoshop and for fun I edited some pictures of my car changing the wheels and trim to black.

I like the way the car looks both ways and I'm leaning one way, but I would like to know what your opinions are before I decide.

What do you think, Keep it as is, or change to satin black?

Thanks,
Rob

Where's Chris Colgan? His Carrot Car has (or at least HAD) that exact same color combination and I thought it looked awesome.
I find it hard to make a choice btwn those two options ~ personally I could live quite well with either one.

I like the blacked out look and thinking of that myself. Just not with the rims, looks better with the chrome rims. IMO.

Personally, I never liked it. Blacked out trim looks to me like something a poor teenager does to his car because he can't afford to get real chrome. Even if the work is flawless, it looks poor to me.

Well I guess Nissan became "Poor Teenagers" because they started blackening out about 82-83.

i think the black has way better contrast than the chrome. you kinda lose a lot of the chrome on cars with bright colors. i say go black it makes the orange pop even more. as a graphic designer i have an eye for these things.

hah as a fellow graphic designer, I am doing the opposite on my car. I am going to silver bumpers to offset how my car is dark :)

:D perfect. chrome/silver definitely works on very dark colored cars.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I appreciate hearing your reasons why to leave it alone or change it.

I have to agree that it is the contrast between the black and orange that makes it a more appealing to my eye. I think a black or dark car looks much better with the chrome too. Obviously the easiest thing to do would be to just leave it as is, but I think it would be worth the effort in the end.

10 years ago I would have never considered something like this, I felt that the chrome on the car was one of the things that gave it that vintage classic car look. I felt that way about all old cars then. But ever since I saw a 240z with dark gunmetal Watanabes with no polished lip I loved that look.

r_3, I was thinking the same thing about getting fiberglass bumpers. I do like the rubber strips though and the bumper guards have grown on me over time. I wouldn't think there would be any reason the rubber strips couldn't be installed on the fiberglass bumpers. Is there? I would probably just not install the bumper guards as I think it looks good with or without. When I do this I'll give you a really good deal on the bumper. Maybe even free, if you want to pick it up. It probably won't be until the summer though as I have to finish a complete driveline swap first. I'd like to have it all done before ZCONN. If the driveline swap takes longer than expected I might have to wait until the fall for this project. I don't like having the car off the road in the summer.

I was thinking of having the wheels powder coated. When I researched it online there is conflicting information. Some say it weakens the wheel due to the heat curing process and others say it isn't a problem. Have any of you witnessed a wheel fail due to powder coating? I heard that some powder coaters use lower temperature curing powder for this. If a powder coating shop nearby offers that I think it would be the safer way to do it. Do any of you guys know of a shop around here that does it?

Thanks,
Rob

holding my breath... you know what sucks is I JUST sold my fiberglass bumpers... I do have a 73 rear bumper that would just need some straightening if you were just going to paint it black. If not I'll wait patiently :)
