Well I just got myself some smoked light covers in my truck load of 240 parts, still in the box new. If I can find 6 more of these magnets I have, that's the way I'd like to go. 3M tape is my second option. I could also drill holes only because I have an extra set of light scoops.

New they go for about $65 a pair. Now if you're into the longer ZG versions, those can go $300 and up...

How are they designated BSRs? Etched into the glass, or something? I mean, how would I know they are BSR by looking at them?

The are still in the original BSR packaging including box, hardware, instructions and invoice. I have not personally inspected them as to any uniqueness.

Hi Guys:
I've had some time to read some of the older threads and just wanted to add some information or comments on this subject. I realize it may be "nit-picky"... but perhaps some will find it interesting..

ZCARNUT wrote:
Datsun didn't use headlight covers on the 240Z due to the fact that they were not legal for North American cars.

I would say "Nissan did not equip the Datsun 240Z's for North America with headlight covers". The main reason was that U.S. Federal Regulations prohibited manufacturers from selling cars with them installed. Nissan/Datsun were free to sell them as component parts over their Parts Counter to anyone that wished to buy them.

Additionally a few States prohibited them for road use, in all other States they were perfectly legal and private owners could do as they wish.

For the above reasons - I would hesitate to use the broad statement that "they were not legal".

ZCARNUT wrote:
And knowing Datsun, they did it to keep the cost down as well. Jaguar also eliminated headlight covers on the XKE at that time.

Yes - and the time was 1968 for the manufacturers selling cars in the U.S.

I've always thought that the "sugar scoop" headlights were the one defining characteristic of the Z, it should stay that way. FYI, the reason Datsun designers went with the sugar scoop headlights was to meet the motor vehicle safety regulations of the time which specified the height of automobile headlights. The original design called for hidden "flip up" headlights!

Several different design alternatives were developed and considered during the Styling phase of the project.

The original styling of Design Alternative "Plan A" which would evolve into what we know today as the original Z Car - featured sugar scoops with headlight covers mounted flush to the body -somewhat like the one's BRE sold. Another design alternative considered was titled "Plan C", it featured "flip up" headlights but was not selected for advancement.

By the time the Plan "A" car finished the design to production transition - the headlight covers for the Nissan Fairlady Z as sold in Japan - were mounted with large chrome trim rings.

Anyway - a little more trivia for everyone..
FWIW,
Carl B.

The chrome rings come in the Head Light Cover set - with the clear lenses. NOS sets sell for anywhere between $1000.00 and $1400.00. One set that no one noticed, sold on E-Bay a few months ago for $350.00. The seller didn't know what he had.

For $1400.00 you get the original boxes, instructions, mounting hardware, trim rings and lenses. For less than that you usually are missing something like the mounting hardware, or they are reproductions, or they may have been mounted in the past..

The set pictured below is a mixed newer/older part numbers - sold for $1200.00 as I recall.

Cool, but to pricey for me. I bought a truck load of s30 parts last year, $120 total, and brand new in a box was some tinted ones, not a bad deal I suppose.

yeah i paid 500 for my Z so paying 1200 for light covers might be too steep for me.

Hey, it would be a quick way of making your Z worth $1,700 now. :P
