Hi Rick,
I kinda like the look of the fender mirror's, but I will admit the aesthetics aren't for everybody. To me it looks like the current 370 mirrors are a bit of an afterthought to begin with, so breaking up the look isn't a giant bother.

Outside of the look, the big reason I was thinking of this is actually function. The 370 has *really* nasty blind spots as it is. The OEM mirror is extremely tall, but very very narrow. Outside of the blind spot issue, this also makes seeing curbs a challenge. All of the replacements I have been looking at are both wider then the stock mirrors but also have very nice convex glass. My hope is that by shifting them forward and changing the width not only can I knock out some of the blind spots but make the side visibility in general a bit better.

From everything I have read into the adjustment is a PITA two person job, but I guess it goes with the territory. Right now I am still on the hunt for the right set, Chris is on target and I would agree that the ones I have dug up thus far are a little too rectangular. I think the latest set comes closer to idea, though.

Cheers,
-Cam

We had a pretty good debate about this, here in this Forum, about two years ago. Couldn't find it in the time I have right now. I think it was one of Clive's early Posts.

The fender-mounts do change the angle, size and location of the driver's blind spots. They are quicker to see than door mirrors, since the driver doesn't have to take his eyes off the road to use them.

In a wheel-to-wheel racing scenario, they became two more objects to get knocked off the car if you get nerffed, and they are harder than blazes to adjust from the driver's seat. If your wheels are out of balance, the bounce gets transferred to any fender-mounts, giving you a blur.

They have to have some solid advantages, tho. All the old Brit sports cars I drove in the 60s had them, and all (I mean ALL) the cars in Japan and Okinawa had them, many of them fish-eye convexes.. It must be a law or a manufacturing code there.

If I'm correct, one of the reasons the fender mirrors were actually implemented in Japan on the Fairlady was for insurance reasons. The way they're mounted actually reduces the width of the car, because they do not extend past the fender (even without flares installed). I guess some ways you can save on your car related payments in Japan is to have a narrower car...

And yes, all the taxis I rode in on Okinawa still have fender mirrors.

I kinda like the carbon ones...

Another thing to consider is the shape of the glass. If its meant to go on your door, its probably going to be the "Objects in Mirror are Closer than They Appear" type glass (at least on the passenger side, not sure if the driver side applies).

Every one I have checked out so far has convex glass, that was a concern I had. If this mocks up well I am really thinking of moving forward, killing off the blindspots on this car would be a godsend.

Hey, Chris (Phrog), Rick here.

You hit it right on, Bro, the fender mirrors were for reducing overall
width due to the narrow lanes on the even narrower streets. And
unofficially, I might add, to protect them from Schumacher wannabes
downtown! You know what I mean if you have ever been in Tokyo
or Seoul. My cousins in Italy tell me it is even worse in Rome, and I
have heard that Paris is the worst, which must be awful, considering
what I have seen in New York.

BTW it wasn't my intention to start a war or even badmouth another
guy's Z; just expressing an opinion. To me, any Z is great,
irrespective of how her owner chose to set her up. That's one of
the neat things about cars; each owner can express individuality.

Cam, I undrstnd from your opening Post that you intend to delete the door mirrors and replace them with these fender-mounts.

Would you consider doing me a favor when you approach this? Could you please mount the fenders first, then photograph the car with both sets of mirrors on it?

You might even drive it around the block that way and see if you like it!

Frank

Hey Rick,
Never took at as you starting any sort of flame war, part of the reason for this thread was to get input weather it be love it or hate it. You are dead on though, these cars are a wonderful canvas for building something that is a reflection of your personal taste and desire.

Mike,
Not sure, I am really torn between the BRE mirrors and the first of the two most recent carbon ones. What do you think? Part of the reason that I love those carbon sets is that they are available in multiple stalk lengths/configuration. Found a set that would be AWESOME by Do-Luck(off a Supra IIRC) and they are even electric and could probably be hacked into working remotely, but the price tag was a dead killer($700-800).

Hey Frank,
I am some place between "Intend" and "might"

The reason I opened this was to see if I could get a good visualization before moving forward. My plan would be to do a first mockup with a temp set to see if it even works in person before spending any real money on a set.

If it ends up going that far, I will snap some shots and share them with the crowd before doing any drilling :)

Don't worry Rick, no offense taken. Everyone has their own opinions, and fender mirrors aren't for everyone. :)

I remember last year at one of those Monday evening car shows in North Haven (like a week before we bumped into you) and I was over at Frank's car talking to him. A guy came up to us admiring Franks blue Z, telling him how he loved the old 240s. Then he proceeded to tell us how "that other one" across the lot was awful with all that "modern crap" done to it. I think it made him backpedal a little when I told him it was mine. But I have done a lot of Abby Normal things to it, and I realize not everyone is going to like it.

Me, too, especially the color. It reminds me of #06289 when she was
still a little baby Z in the corner of the showroom floor, reaching out
to me with a hopeful gaze and crying, "Take me! Take me!"

I couldn't resist that any more than I can resist little girls or puppies.
