made a big difference. Chris and his Orange 78 inspired me. and man that bumper was heavy. now i just need to figure out how to remove the shocks for the bumper.

the front bumper shocks are only bolted on with 3-4 bolts... easy to remove.

The rear shocks require the fuel tant to be dropped a little to remove the passengers side.

Please don't cut them or take a torch to them... they are gas filled from what I heard.

It occurs to me that CHICK's junkyard in Wallingford had several Z carz on-site earlier this year. Most of them had skinny bumpers usable for this application. They may be a bit rusty or have slight bends, but if you intend to cut them up anyway, they should do fine.

I'll zee if I can load a link here to help you find CHICKs.

(OK, I can't 'link' it, so here's the info):

Looking for a 240z front bumper. Condition doesn't matter. I would really appreciate it if you could scout it out for me. Thanks

you don't need to remove your bumper pistons. for the front, drill a small hole in the piston and let the air and gas out to push them in so you can mount your new black dragon front skinny bumper that just cost you 150.00 and has no bends and no rust. the order would be for a early 260z. the rear would do the same except you will have to find a used early 260 bumper as there are no new replacements that i know of yet. for both front and back you will need early 260 mounts or fashion your own, it's not that hard. i did this little job on my car this past summer and wondered why i didn't do it sooner. it only took me 15 years to figure out. oh, don't forget to wear your safety glasses when drilling and put some old towels down to catch the mess, not alot, but some. mike

i forgot to say there are little philip screws in the middle of each piston face that need to be backed out also. that will release the air in the pistons. you still need to drill small holes in the bottom of the pistons to release the oil/ gas inside. after pushing the pistons in ,i screwed them tight so they can't walk back out. sorry i'm so long winded, i really need to get out more offen. mike

That's a lot less work than buying an old one, carving it up and painting it. Stripping the old chrome off is a BEAR, and it doesn't look good unless you do that.

I gave up trying to strip mine. I paid a bodyshop $100 to strip just the center section down to the bare metal, primer it and flat-black it. It came out OK and I saved myself a lot of time and aggravation. I happened to have a spare $100 at the time and I was in a hurry, or it might not have been worth it.

MSA has fiberglass or carbon fiber 240 bumpers. Then you need the brackets made to put a 240 bumper on a 280. Of course with the marker lights, you can't fool a Z guy, but it would look better than those big bumpers, IMHO. Also, the rear shocks might have a bolt going down into them from the hatch area. Not sure on the s30, but the s130 does.

zman,
did you decide to go with the repro or do you still want me to swing through Chicks for a quick look?

i still wanna do the corner piece idea but only if the price is right. if not i am going with no bumper at all. so if you can scope it out and get back to me that would be awesome.

When you visit CHICKS be sure to see the green 240Z (1971) he has near the office. It's between the office and the first gate, on the same side of the street. It had both bumpers on it when I was there last, and I removed one of them but only took the brackets. I put the bumper inside the cargo hatch, but he said he might stand it up inside the office by the back door later on.

He also has three more Zs across the street, but they're 280s and 2+2 ZXs. He has one ZX TTop on the office side, but the bumpers won't do for this application.

I know you're just looking for a good excuse to visit CHICKS! Take your camera and really wander around in there ~ you'll be amazed at what you see. Wear good leather boots ~ you have to climb over many cars, parked door to door.

Have fun! CLOSED WEEKENDS!
