I recently tried flux-cored MIG welding and realized that I'm not very good at it, and I'm not sure if I want to shell out the money to get a gas-shielded setup, so does anyone want to weld in some floor pans in my Jeep Cherokee for me? All the prep work has been done - floors out, rust ground, everything primed with weld-thru primer. I will pay in beer and/or cash, let me know your price!

I'll bet you weren't very good at sex the first time you tried it either, but with practice life got better, right?

Talk to Air Jockey (Clayton Pace) up in Meriden about welding. He taught himself without burning down his neighborhood (altho he does have some humorous stories about the learning process). He'll tell you it's easier than you think.

Frank

So, Frank, to build on your analogy: just like sex, I should never pay for welding?

Felipe, it sounds like I've got to give it another go-round at this point. I'll keep your buddy in mind though, thanks!

I have been welding for 30 + years and one thing i have found is
The key to welding is CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN metal did i mention the metal must be clean ? Remove any primer from the immediate weld area and after tacking run a wire wheel on a drill around the lip of the patch . Like frank said its all practice . Do small runs first "tacking " at 12 , 3,6.and 9 o clock around the patch and then expand the tacked areas to about an inch continually moving and expanding the welded areas If doing two different patch areas jump back and forth so the metal cools All this is to avoid warping , . Try different heat settings and wire feeds until it works best. Flux core isnt going to give you pretty welds but is fine for NON structural repairs . You might actually like welding better with Gas shielding Its night and day from flux core
ONE last thing WEAR YOUR WELDING HELMET !!!

"ONE last thing WEAR YOUR WELDING HELMET !!! "

Hey, AMEN to that, Bob. I've set my clothes on fire and one of my relatives is just now getting out of the hospital from "weld-burn" to both eyes. No, nothing hot touched his eyes, and he was wearing a shield. It just wasn't dark enough.

Safety first, or it isn't fun.

If I were to return to welding, I'd first buy a suit of armor.

I also said HELMET because Welding Goggles that may be fine for Oxy Acetylene are not dark enough to protect from a MIG / TIG Arc and besides that will give you a very funny welders "Tan" Think Raccoon eyes but with white circles around the eyes .Frank what you are talking about is "Flash burns" its like sunburning the back of your eye balls and feels like someone threw sand in your eyes ."Been there Done That "

All, thanks for the help and motivation. Did you say "night and day" difference between gas-shielded and flux-cored, Bob? Wow! I can't believe the difference! I went out and spent the money, converted over to GMAW, and am finally getting some purty little beads. Floors go in tomorrow, hopefully!

Cerami Glad you took the leap of faith and converted to gas , I really do not know why they sell those Shielded wire "welders" They make even a Pro Welder look like a beginner but With the gas Even a beginner can get results like a pro (with some practice ).Sorry to harp on the safety but be sure there are no Fuel lines near where you are welding . Some new cars have plastic lines that weld splatter can melt and Have a Fire extinguisher handy , Should be one mounted on the welder at all times .
