Hi guys,

So it looks like I will be driving the Z home. A few of you guys said just bring registered plates slap 'em on, and drive back. That's cool and all, but let's say there's an accident on the way back, then what happens? I have driver's insurance, so would that suffice to cover me?

Yea, I could call the DMV, but that's a full day's worth of time.

What have you guys done in the past to "cover your bases"?

That is a very complicated thing... I have read a lot into it.

The most 'legit' way to do it is to obtain some kind of temp. or "in-transit" registration from the PA DMV.

Other things people have done: ask seller to borrow his plates until you get home then mail him the plates.

I asked/paid my seller to drive to a CT dmv where we did the deal and I got the temporary CT plates and paperwork right there.

For an accident scenario, you definitely need to have purchased insurance on the car already before you drive it home. I bought it the day before, but you can usually buy insurance online (i.e. see the car, make the deal, go to starbucks or use phone to buy insurance and get temp. card emailed to you).

HI guys,

I just got off the phone with CT dmv. Justin is indeed correct. I'll need "in transit" plates, or borrow the guy's current plates.

I didn't ask the guy at the dmv, but I can imagine that even with the current owner's plates, I'd need my own insurance on the car.

Hmm.....

I am not 100% but pretty sure that you need CT insurance on the car no matter what.

It is a really painless process now that you can do things online. It takes only like 15 minutes to get signed up with most common insurance. I did Geico and it took me a few minutes to fill out the forms (you mainly need the car VIN number, description, etc. as well as some of your information). They email you a temporary insurance card right away and you can drive with that just fine.

I called and asked if companies provide temporary insurance, but none of them did.

I bought insurance on my car the night before I got it, but that was only because I looked at the car and knew I wanted to purchase. If you are still debating whether or not you want to buy this car, the process is fast enough where you can do it right then if you happen to decide to buy the car.

Thanks for the info Justin.

I wasn't going to register the car and get insurance right away because I wanted to do some work on her before I got her on the streets. I don't have an immediate need for a vehicle. So this kind of puts me in a fix.

And yea, what you did makes a lot of sense, because you knew you were going to buy it....I have yet to see it.
