Does anyone have an idea who has original hubcaps for a 240 for sale (those with a "D")?

They are quite rare and expensive. I've spotted few in ebay.

I thought we had a recent discussion about these, but I can't find it now. Somebody was selling a set on eBay and one of our members taught us something new about where the valve stem hole is placed........?

Rick? Were you involved in that discussion? Can you find it again?

Frank

I'll try, Frank, but I'm still pretty inept with these dadgum computers!

I do have a couple of extra sets in varying degrees of condition, but
would prefer to keep them in case (1) #1905 arrives with anything
other than original 4-1/2" steelies with these original "D" wheel covers.
or (2) any of the oldies happens to "throw" a hubcap while on the road.
Which is a distinct possibility because the REAL original caps had so few
"teeth" to secure them to the rim they flew off at every bump in the road.

Thor, that 240Z I looked at for you here in CT (the one I sent the report about) had a box full of those caps in the cargo deck!!! I remember thinking how valuable (and vulnerable) they were, and telling myself, "I'm not a thief....I'm not a thief.....I'm not a thief..."

I don't know. It was many miles from my home so I never went back to check on it. Hopefully somebody bought it and restored it. It needed a lot of work. The frame was bad, the performance was poor and the brakes were absolutely frightening.

I'm glad you did not buy it.

Frank

There's one on eBay right now, which is about to close.
However, it is a SECOND-TIME listing with NO bids so far.
Sorry I don't know how to create a link to it, but I found it by typing
in "Datsun on eBay." The guy wants I think $59 for it; it really isn't all
that bad, but I gave the guy a hard time to try to get a lower price.

He gave me some hooey about how he has been in Zs for 25 years,
and then went on and on about his experience and how he knows every-
thing (my words) about Z Cars. All, I suppose, to impress me with
his contention that $59 was the deal of the century.

I tried to remain civil; I really wanted to call him a rookie. I was
tempted to ask him what took him so long to get started in Z Cars, since
I have been around Zs for 41 years next month. And that I had been with
Bob Sharp in the '70s. Etc., etc., etc. But I kept my mouth shut.

Just an update... on the "D" hubcaps.
Personally I haven't seen any "D" hubcaps sell for less than $100.00 each in many years - no matter the condition. They may be selling for less in todays economy... perhaps I should be keeping an eye out for some. They are always a good investment if you can buy them at the right price.

A NOS set of four would sell for $1200.00 to $1600.00, a "restored to show condition set" would be $1200.00. In very good, but less than show condition they are usually $150.00 each.

I can see one single "D" hubcap selling for $59.00 - as most guys need 4 of them - and they only want to pay a shipping charge once.

FWIW,
Carl B.
