Mike ~ you actually want to ask for an "IGNITION LOCK CYLINDER WITH KEY".

The "switch" is a separate unit which is activated by the ignition lock cylinder.

Try looking it up that way?

I have one for a 240Z, but I'm pretty sure they are all year-specific. Datsun kept adding bells and whistles each year, until their sportscar became a Grand Tourer.

Anybody know for sure if a 1971 lock cylinder will work in a 280Z?

Frank

Mike, try Rockauto. They list the key cylinder for $16 and the entire assembly for as low as $85

They are all the same 1970-78.

I have some lying around. Also have COMPLETE LOCKSETS WITH MATCHING KEY if anyone is interested.

I recently changed my ignition switch (the part which the cylinder lock mechanism activates). I looked at two bags full of different year switches, to duplicate the one on my 1970 car. There were several different styles. The main difference appeared to be the size and shape of the slot (in the switch) which the cylinder lock fit into.

That means to me that there must be corresponding differences in the lock mechanisms themselves.

Mike, I'm pretty sure I have a 1971 lock and key. If it will fit your switch, you can have it in exchange for some additional artwork I have in mind.

As far as I know, the only difference is in the shape of the key (and its corresponding lock cylinder). There is an "A" key and a "B" key. Both look almost exactly the same and are the same length and width. The only difference is that the grooves on them are mirrored, so if you use the wrong key the groove won't be on the right side.

As long as I can start my car and it's a Datsun key I'm happy. :D

Phrog ~

Yes, but I'm talking about the actual ignition switch, that little 'hockey puck" which screws onto the back (or bottom) of the key cylinder. That's where all the wires are connected.

Looking at a bagful of Z switches, I noted some with different electrical connectors on the back, and others with different size and shaped slots in them, where the key cylinders fit. That means there have to be differences in some key cylinders, too.

If my spare 1971 key cylinder fits into Mike's ignition switch, he's good to go. If not, it means that was just one more of the hundred things Datsun changed btwn the early 240Z and the late 280Z.

Frank

The other thing different is the 280z has only one key the 240's have a seperate key to unlock the doors. And the ignition key is round. The 280z key is not. As long as my key says Datsun I'm happy
