My Z didn't make one lap yesterday. Lost 3rd then all gears. It's a stock 5spd. Anyone have a good used trans they'd like to sell and bring to the track today, Sunday morning or live close and I will pick up? One was suppose to be dropped at my paddock spot last night but it didn't show. We're the Grabber Green #185 Z in B paddock. The one on jack stands.

Being that this is my first Z race car I'm keen to hear what options I have for a trans upgrade.

Racer ~
The Club 1971 240Z Parts Car still has the original (street) 4spd(71B) in it but I don't know what shape it's in, nor do I suspect it would be very competitive on the track. Also, no way to pull it or get it up to you this weekend ~ you'd have to do all the work and transport yrslf. IT MIGHT NOT FIT YOUR DRIVESHAFT if you've modified it. Car is up on jackstands with room to slide under it.......? Two men could snatch the box in 1/2 hr if they have electric impact wrenches (and rust goggles!)

$50 donation to the Club, cash or check.

I got a 260Z 4 speed already pulled...but rain got on it, it's not the best looking condition, and the throw out bearing is not smooth....but for the price...

Guys,
Thanks for your offers. There was a gearbox waiting at my trailer this morning so we made the afternoon race. Big thanks to John and Louie from Economy Signs in Danbury for use of the trans and lots of help.

Steve

Hey! A Series-1 DB4 Aston on one side of you, and our member Al Robbins' Z car on the other! Shawn should be pitting for that #33 car. He owns a 1970 240Z which was sold from the same showroom as mine in Honolulu in the summer of '70.

Glad you got a 'box to use, and I hope it works for you.

Beautiful Z!

For future reference, the 240SX 5-speed is what to use for racing. So I was told by the mechanic that builds the ones in the Docs garage.

I feel you you, sounds like you may have sheared the roll pins on a couple of the forks. I did this a couple of times back in the early '80s with my '76 280Z when doing some hard shifts at redline.

The pins cost under a dollar, but the whole trans needed to be opened up to replace them. The Z Doc in Va. finally replaced them with something indestructible like a finishing nail which was his racing fix. Never had any problems after that.

 A finishing nail, I like that. Now Brian, why the T5 ? Wide ratio correct ? I replaced mine with an 83 N/A tranni. and like it it much better. IMO I did find a site that sells parts for the T5 to handle 500lbs of torque. ummmmmm. Choices.

The borrowed trans got us into the Saturday afternoon race but 5 laps into it the engine quit. We pulled the valve cover and found the cam broken into 3 pieces. Wish I could have given you a better show this weekend. Next year guys.

"...we pulled the valve cover and found the cam broken into 3 pieces."

Ouch, serious bad luck.

Rebello engines aren't supposed to do that. The timing gear pulled itself off the front of the cam, too.

This engine has a reputation of walking the dog over most American V8s on the track. It's a really nice 3.1L Stroker which looked well maintained. It's a mystery how a Gremlin jumped in there at speed and bit the cam......

Went through my papers and the engine was done back in early 2003 so who knows how many hours are on it. Prior to the failure this was a good strong engine so I'm looking to just make the repairs and not change the combination. It made 322 hp/223 ft lbs torque at 7600 rpm on the Rebello dyno after the build in April 03.

Frank T. My VIN is HLS 30369049. Is my Z a '77?

Check it again, please, and confirm?
Looks like too many digits.
